Im Jahr 2010 veröffentlichte Chelsea Manning geheime Militärdokumente, die sie als Geheimdienstanalystin für die US-Armee im Irak auf der Speicherkarte ihrer Digitalkamera herausgeschmuggelt hatte. Die Armee klagte sie in zweiundzwanzig Punkten im Zusammenhang mit dem unerlaubten Besitz und der Verbreitung von geheimen Dokumenten an und verurteilte sie zu fünfunddreißig Jahren Militärgefängnis. Am Tag nach ihrer Verurteilung erklärte Manning ihre Geschlechtsidentität als Frau und begann die Transition. Im Jahr 2017 verkürzte Präsident Barack Obama ihre Haftstrafe, und Chelsea Manning wurde aus dem Gefängnis entlassen.
In ihren Erinnerungen erzählt Manning von ihrem Einsatz für mehr institutionelle Transparenz und Rechenschaftspflichten der Regierung und von dem Kampf um ihre Rechte als Transfrau.
