魯迅の長編小説。阿Qという愚かでうぬぼれの強い最下層の人間を主人公として描き、国民へ無知・無自覚であることへの危機を訴えた作品である。
阿Qは無知だがプライドだけは高く、よく嘘もつく。村人にバカにされたり、喧嘩に負けても自分の頭の中で理論をすり替え、勝利と思い込む愚かな男だ。ある時、革命騒ぎが起き、阿Qもそれに乗じて意味も分からず騒ぎ、捕らえられる。何もわからず騒いでいた阿Qは、碌な弁明もできずに処刑されることになる。村人たちもこの事件を大して考えようともせず、阿Qの死に方が期待と違うことへ不満を漏らしただけだった。愚かな国民は、無意義の見世物の材料になるか、あるいはその観客になるかだけなのである。
