Acerca de esta escucha
Despite considerable press coverage and a lengthy trial, the full story of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints has remained largely untold. Only one man can reveal the whole, astounding truth: Sam Brower, the private investigator who devoted years of his life to breaking open the secret practices of the FLDS and bringing Warren Jeffs and his inner circle to justice.
In Prophet's Prey, Brower implicates Jeff in his own words, bringing to light the contents of Jeffs's personal priesthood journal, discovered in a hidden underground vault, and revealing to readers the shocking inside world of FLDS members, whose trust he earned and who showed him the staggering truth of their lives.
Prophet's Prey offers the gripping, behind-the-scenes account of a bizarre world from the only man who knows the full story.

Historia
In the polygamous Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS), girls can become valuable property as plural wives, but boys are expendable, even a liability. In this powerful and heartbreaking account, former FLDS member Brent Jeffs reveals both the terror and the love he experienced growing up on his prophet's compound and the harsh exile existence that so many boys face once they have been expelled by the sect.

Historia
What do we really know about modern practicing polygamists - not fictional ones like the Henrickson family on HBO’s Big Love? We’ve seen the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the news, the underage brides in pioneer dresses on a Texas ranch. But the FLDS is just one of many groups that have broken with mainstream Mormonism to follow those parts of Joseph Smith’s doctrine disavowed by the LDS Church. Gaining unprecedented access to these communities, journalist Sanjiv Bhattacharya reveals a shadow country....

Historia
Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith.

Historia
When police raided the Short Creek compound of the Fundamental Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1953, it soon became a political and publicity nightmare and eventually cost the governor of Arizona his job. From that point on, skittish public officials allowed the polygamist sect to practice its tenants unmolested for the next 50 years and turned a blind eye to child abandonment, kidnapping, statutory rape, incest, and massive tax and welfare fraud. But then Warren Jeffs, a new FLDS prophet, escalated the sect’s crimes to near madness.

Historia
In September 2007, Elissa Wall, the star witness against polygamous sect leader Warren Jeffs, gave captivating testimony of how Jeffs forced her to marry her first cousin at age 14. This harrowing account proved to be the most compelling evidence against Jeffs, showing the harsh realities of this closed community and the lengths to which Jeffs went in order to control the sect's women. Now, in this courageous memoir, Wall tells the incredible story of how she emerged from the confines of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints and helped bring one of America's most notorious criminals to justice.

Like the men whose epic stories Jon Krakauer has told in his previous bestsellers, Pat Tillman was an irrepressible individualist and iconoclast. In May 2002, Tillman walked away from his $3.6 million NFL contract to enlist in the United States Army. He was deeply troubled by 9/11, and he felt a strong moral obligation to join the fight against al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Two years later, he died on a desolate hillside in southeastern Afghanistan.

It happened just outside of Jasper, a sleepy East Texas logging town that, within 24 hours of the discovery of the murder, would be inextricably linked in the nation's imagination to an exceptionally brutal, modern-day lynching. In this superbly written examination of the murder and its aftermath, award-winning journalist Joyce King brings us on a journey that begins at the crime scene.

Historia
On a Friday night in March 1981, Henry Hays and James Knowles scoured the streets of Mobile in their car, hunting for a black man. The young men were members of Klavern 900 of the United Klans of America. They were seeking to retaliate after a largely black jury could not reach a verdict in a trial involving a black man accused of the murder of a white man. The two Klansmen found 19-year-old Michael Donald walking home alone.

On September 15, 1963, the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL, was bombed, killing four young girls. Who were the perpetrators? Due to reluctant witnesses and racial prejudice, the FBI closed the case without any indictments. But as Martin Luther King, Jr., claimed, "the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." Bending Toward Justice is a detailed account of this key moment in our national struggle for equality and the long road to prosecuting those responsible for the tragedy, related by an author who played a major role in the investigation.

Scientology, created in 1954 by a prolific sci-fi writer named L. Ron Hubbard, claims to be the world's fastest-growing religion, with millions of members around the world and huge financial holdings. Its celebrity believers keep its profile high, and its teams of "volunteer ministers" offer aid at disaster sites such as Haiti and the World Trade Center. But Scientology is also a notably closed faith, harassing journalists and others through litigation and intimidation, even infiltrating the highest levels of government to further its goals.

Very revealing about the evil nurtured in the west
What made the experience of listening to Prophet's Prey the most enjoyable?
The details and exhaustive research.
Who was your favorite character and why?
There aren't any "favorite" characters in the FDS. It was hard for me to even drum up any sympathy for the women, except those raised into it and brainwashed from birth.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Prophet's Prey is just fine.
Any additional comments?
My only criticism is that the book could be better-written. It is very repetitive. On the other hand, the author is a private investigator, not a writer, so he is to be forgiven. I admire his investigative work, though. He's done a courageous and selfless thing exposing this evil cult.

horrible narration, excellent story
the narrator nearly ruined this book for me. he was rushed and obviously had no idea how various terms were pronounced. good book though and well investigated.

Good story. Worth a listen.
Having listened to "Under the Banner of Heaven," this story is definitely a worthwhile listen. However, you don't need to have read it to appreciate the story.

Fascinating & Frightening
A vivid and detailed account of the FLDS leader, his followers and his crimes. Hard to believe and difficult to deny. Recommended for anyone who wants to know more about this cult and its disturbing beliefs.

Correlation with my own experience; facts I was never told but are plausible.
Great content and layout. It matches really well with my experience inside the church and the overwhelming mysteries that surrounded the church leadership several years. It blows my mind how much truth was withheld from me, and how I was brought to feel that I just needed to be a better person and prove my worthiness.
Until hearing things like this, I never realized how much I was being abused, deceived and led on, believing it was for a noble cause. This book really opened a wide perspective on that.

Good story
I was not enjoying the narration at first, but got used to it. The story was interesting, but should have added an epilogue as to what happened to Jeff’s as the story was written before his cases were completed. Overall worth listening too!

How?
How can this happen today and in this country? Not only did it happen, but it is still happening. We like to look at other countries (Afghanistan, North Korea, Africa, Middle East, etc.) and go on about how barbaric they are. I thought we had laws against raping twelve year old girls, but it seems our laws just don't work when it comes to religions that have rape as part of there beliefs. I have no problem with multiple marriage between consenting adults, but 12-16 year old girls!!!
Sam Brower is the author of this book and all Krakauer does is write a small Introduction. I bought the book thinking he was a co-writer. I am a big fan of Krakauer and have read all that I know that he has written. Having said that this is still a good book and a very important book. Brower is a private investigator and not an author, so the writing of this is not as polished as a JK book, but the content makes up for it. Jon Krakauer's "Under The Banner of Heaven" is an excellent book and is on the same subject. It is more polished, but has less of the facts and none on the trial. I think everyone should read both books.
It can be hard to take. This is a society who treats women or little girls as baby making machines, They marry the girls off at very young ages to men, decades older then they are. They are forced to have sex. They are often the second, third or 90th wife. In a ten year marriage a women is likely to have nine kids and they keep going until they can not have kids anymore and then they are discarded. Little boys are considered competition and many are driven out of town and told don't come back, don't call and don't write. Many times men are ex-communicated and kicked out. Then their wives and children are given to another man, like cattle. Some women get passed around several times.
This is a sad book, but an important one and I have only scratched the surface of what you find out in the book.

So Good!
Would you listen to Prophet's Prey again? Why?
A perfect balance of intrigue and history. I'll read anything these two write.

fascinating, scary, and eye opening
What other book might you compare Prophet's Prey to and why?
Under the Banner of Heaven
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
it outraged me and made me sad that so many Americans have no idea how dangerous a theocracy is.
Any additional comments?
the author is my new hero.
