Acerca de esta escucha
Bloomsbury presents Pretty Young Rebel by Flora Fraser, read by Cathleen McCarron.
A SPECTATOR AND SCOTSMAN BOOK OF THE YEAR
'So well researched, pacily written and sympathetic to the Auld Cause that it almost makes one a Jacobite' Andrew Roberts, Spectator
‘Enthralling . . . Throws us straight into the fresh air, heather, rain and midges of the Hebrides, followed by the swamps and creeks of North America . . . Full of unforgettable glimpses’ The Times
The year is 1746. The Jacobite rebellion has failed catastrophically and Scotland is reeling in the devastating aftermath of the battle of Culloden. Far to the west, on an island in the Outer Hebrides, twenty-four-year-old Flora Macdonald is woken in the dead of night by a messenger with urgent intelligence.
Bonnie Prince Charlie is outside, begging for her help.
With Flora's assistance, the Stuart prince is disguised as an Irish maid and smuggled to the Isle of Skye, evading government troops. Flora’s bravery and determination will see her immortalised in ballads and proclaimed a Scottish heroine. But her efforts also result in her capture and detention in London. Released the following year and returning to Skye, Flora goes on to marry and emigrate to North Carolina, only then to be caught up in the American Revolutionary War.
In Pretty Young Rebel, award-winning biographer Flora Fraser tells the remarkable story of Flora Macdonald. It is a tale of adventure and daring, wit and charm, struggle and survival, and of a woman who showed extraordinary courage in the face of great danger.

Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

Orphaned from infancy, Catherine de’ Medici endured a tumultuous childhood. Married to the French king, she was widowed by forty, only to become the power behind the French throne during a period of intense civil strife. In 1546, Catherine gave birth to a daughter, Elisabeth de Valois, who would become Queen of Spain. Two years later, Catherine welcomed to her nursery the beguiling young Mary Queen of Scots, who would later become her daughter-in-law. Together, Catherine, Elisabeth, and Mary lived through the sea changes that transformed sixteenth-century Europe.

In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. To grow up in the 1950s was to enter a world of polarized national alliances, nuclear threat, and destabilized social hierarchies. To be a privileged white girl in conservative, segregated Virginia was to be expected to adopt a willful blindness to the inequities of race and the constraints of gender. For young Drew Gilpin Faust, the acceptance of both female subordination and racial privilege proved intolerable and galvanizing. Urged to become “well adjusted" and to fill the role of a poised young lady that her upbringing imposed, she found resistance was the necessary price of survival.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

Let Us Descend describes a journey from the rice fields of the Carolinas to the slave markets of New Orleans and into the fearsome heart of a Louisiana sugar plantation. A journey that is as beautifully rendered as it is heart wrenching, the novel is “[t]he literary equivalent of an open wound from which poetry pours” (NPR). Annis, sold south by the white enslaver who fathered her, is the listener’s guide. As she struggles through the miles-long march, Annis turns inward, seeking comfort from memories of her mother and stories of her African warrior grandmother.

Florence, the 1550s. Lucrezia, third daughter of the grand duke, is comfortable with her obscure place in the palazzo: free to wonder at its treasures, observe its clandestine workings, and to devote herself to her own artistic pursuits. But when her older sister dies on the eve of her wedding, Lucrezia is thrust into the limelight: the duke is quick to request her hand in marriage, and her father just as quick to accept on her behalf. Having barely left girlhood behind, Lucrezia must make her way in a court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed.

Historia
In 1785, when the great German poet Friedrich Schiller penned his immortal “Ode to Joy,” he crystallized the deepest hopes and dreams of the European Enlightenment for a new era of peace and freedom, a time when millions would be embraced as equals. Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony then gave wing to Schiller’s words, but barely a century later these same words were claimed by Nazi propagandists and twisted by a barbarism so complete that it ruptured, as one philosopher put it, “the deep layer of solidarity among all who wear a human face.”

Glad that's over...
Ok story... maybe it would mean more if I were from Scotland. Lady helps an ungrateful prince escape...goes on to be a folk hero...has a gaggle of kids....moves to NC....moves back to Scotland because she is a loyalist during revolutionary war. Breaks arms ..unclear exactly how except on a horse....grows old and penniless....grave site over grows for decades and Flora slowly becomes a legend. Do I have that right?
Thanks for the PDF....that cleared a few things up for me.

A Splendid Biography!
This is a splendid biography, meticulously researched and beautifully written. And what a story! Even those who have some familiarity with Flora Macdonald will thrill to hear the old story told anew, will learn new and fascinating details, and will find even more to admire about this woman of courage and sensibility. Among the challenges faced by the author were untangling fact from fiction as well as parsing through complex family relationships in the 18th century Hebridean culture (where seemingly half the characters share the same surname!). The author succeeds very well at both and thoughtfully included excellent maps, family trees and a Glossary of places and names. Readers will want these close at hand, especially early on in the book, since it is almost impossible to follow the story without them. With them, however, the tale unfolds clearly and dramatically. After Flora’s celebrated adventures in the Hebrides and the harrowing aftermath, the author follows the Macdonald family to North Carolina, explaining why this family and a number of other Highland and Island emigrants supported the Crown rather than join in yet another rebellion (their earlier one hadn’t worked out especially well). While many Scots thrived in North Carolina, for others like Flora the experience was a disaster. Outlander fans will find this book of particular interest, as it not only provides the real back story to one of the characters from Season 6 but also explains the theme song of that series – the Skye Boat Song – which was originally written to commemorate Flora’s 1746 voyage to help Bonnie Prince Charlie escape. Finally, the book recounts how Flora’s story, and especially her character, touched a chord not only in her own time but has resonated through succeeding generations to this day.
This review relates to the audio version of the book, read by award-winning narrator Cathleen McCarron, who does a masterful job. She has a crystal-clear voice with an enchanting Scottish accent -- completely intelligible to an American -- and she reads with feeling and enthusiasm, conveying the sense that she really wants to tell you this story. Audio listeners should print out the PDF and pore over the maps while listening to the story, preferably on a dark and stormy night with a wee dram from the Isles. Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing …
