La Poétique est un ouvrage d'Aristote portant sur l'art poétique et plus particulièrement sur les notions de tragédie, d'épopée et d'imitation. Probablement rédigé autour de 335 av. J-C, il a influencé la réflexion occidentale sur l'art pendant des siècles et suscité de nombreux débats. Plusieurs allusions au fil du texte suggèrent que la Poétique est incomplète, plusieurs études, notamment sur la comédie, auraient été perdues.
C'est ici qu'Aristote donne sa célèbre définition de l'art comme imitation. Les différents arts se distinguent les uns des autres par ce caractère essentiel : soit ils imitent différemment, soit ils imitent des choses différentes.
La Poétique est l'ouvrage qui fonde la réflexion sur la poésie et la création littéraire de la civilisation occidentale, de Racine à Nietzsche, tous les grands créateurs, tous les grands théoriciens l'ont lue et méditée. Ses analyses sur la tragédie et la représentation en art gardent toute leur pertinence et leur actualité, et nourrissent encore la création contemporaine.
Aristote (384-322 av. J-C) est un philosophe grec de l'Antiquité. Il est avec Platon, dont il a été le disciple à l'Académie, l'un des penseurs les plus influents que le monde occidental ait connu. Il est aussi l'un des rares à avoir abordé presque tous les domaines de connaissance de son temps : biologie, physique, métaphysique, logique, poétique, politique, rhétorique, éthique et parfois même l'économie. Chez Aristote, la philosophie, à l'origine "amour de la sagesse", est comprise dans un sens plus large comme recherche du savoir pour lui-même, interrogation sur le monde et science des sciences.
