Acerca de esta escucha

To the outside world, they seem to have it all. Cassie Barrett, a renowned anthropologist, and Alex Rivers, one of Hollywood's hottest actors, met on the set of a motion picture in Africa. They shared childhood tales, toasted the future, and declared their love in a fairy-tale wedding. But when they return to California, something alters the picture of their perfect marriage. A frightening pattern is taking shape - a cycle of hurt, denial, and promises, thinly veiled by glamour.

Torn between fear and something that resembles love, Cassie wrestles with questions she never dreamed she would face: How can she leave? Then again, how can she stay?

Disappointed

Jodi Picoult has been my favorite author for many years. I was disappointed in this storyline ; it was very predictable. I did enjoy the narrators though.

Sad reality of life behind the cameras

Too often movie stars lives are depicted as glamorous and extravagant and always happy, it rarely shows the addiction, depression, loneliness, and abuse that often also occurs. Great lesson, that we don't really know the person people often idolize, instead we know the sods of them they are acting like and want us to believe they are.

Not Picoult’s best

I was very surprised by the lack of quality.
Picoult is normally a fantastic, detailed writer. Not only are topics first rate, but the back stories - the color of the books - are typically outstanding. This book just felt very lackluster. It was a very long listen to never really identify with the characters.

Faulty research

Weakly researched in some obvious ways. Sundance and powwow are not interchangeable terms. Dakota is the dialect of Pine Ridge. Still, the story was engaging and the narration excellent.

A lot like a romance novel.

I usually love JPs books because I always learn from her extensive research about things I don’t know about. The native culture and the archaeology was very nice, but the rest was much like a Hollywood Romance.

Pure genius! A must read

This story not only is interesting in terms of characters and storyline but also fascinating in the study of a great romance where the childhood wounds and pain turns something wonderful into something that is life threatening. This author is so incredibly talented in setting a tone and mood and a world that is exceedingly compelling and with characters and cultures that really touch your heart and open your mind. A must read

Interesting

I wasn’t sure I could continue reading this book. I didn’t think I could continue to listen to Cass but I’m glad I read until the end. Very well written. The voice of each character was evident at many levels. I continue to be impressed by this author.

look at the mind of a battered woman

I would like to first acknowledge the story. The thought process of a battered woman. It gives an invite into why women stay with abusive partners. Why they think they can change them. It was an interesting read and left me with a different perspective of these women. They are all SO brave!

The narration was horrible. Slow and mondaine. I struggled to get through it. I found speeding it up some helped but I'd say just read the physical book on this one.

Jodi is one of my favorite authors and typically I learn a lot from her books. Not just from the story itself. From the background knowledge she learns when studying her character's jobs.
I will say this was my least favorite of her books but that's because she has so many absolutely amazing ones that stick with you for a long time after.

The never ending cycle of abuse.

Very interesting story, shows how a woman can always love her husband while finely discovering to stay alive something drastic has to happen.
