Peter Schlemihl est pauvre, il a besoin d'argent, et quand un homme étrange lui propose une bourse magique inépuisable contre son ombre, il n'hésite pas. Est-il après tout si important d'avoir une ombre ? Le pacte conclu, Peter se rend vite compte que le mystérieux personnage n'était autre que le Diable, et qu'il lui a en réalité vendu son âme.
Peter Schlemihl ou l'Homme qui a perdu son ombre est un récit fantastique d'Adalbert von Chamisso publié pour la première fois en 1813. Il s'inscrit dans la veine romantique allemande, mais est plein de modernité et de fantaisie.
Adalbert von Chamisso (1781-1838) était un écrivain et botaniste franco-allemand. Né dans le Marne, sa famille quitte la France en 1790 pour fuir la Révolution, et s'établit successivement à Liège (Belgique), La Haye (Pays-Bas), puis en Allemagne, où il finira ses jours. Il s'engage dans l'armée prussienne à 17 ans et la quitte en 1808, désillusionné et découragé. En 1810, il rentre en France, fréquente le cercle de Madame de Staël, et la suit dans son exile en Suisse. C'est là qu'il se passionne pour la botanique. En 1812, il rentre à Berlin et continue ses recherches. En 1815, il s'engage sur un bateau russe. En 1818, il devient le gardien du jardin botanique de Berlin. En 1820, il se marie. Bien qu'il conserva la nationalité française durant toute sa vie, Chamisso écrivit la majorité de son œuvre en Allemand. Ses écrits couvrent les genres les plus divers, et touchent tant à botanique et à la linguistique, qu'à la fiction et à la poésie. Il reste cependant le plus connu pour son roman Peter Schlemihl (1813) qui fut traduit dans de nombreuses langues et pour son cycle de poèmes L'Amour et la Vie d'une femme qui fut mis en musique par Robert Schumann.
