An eye-opening guide to the world's best parenting strategies
Research reveals that American kids lag behind in academic achievement, happiness, and wellness. Christine Gross-Loh exposes culturally determined norms we have about "good parenting," and asks, Are there parenting strategies other countries are getting right that we are not?
This book takes us across the globe and examines how parents successfully foster resilience, creativity, independence, and academic excellence in their children. Illuminating the surprising ways in which culture shapes our parenting practices, Gross-Loh offers objective, research-based insight such as:
- Co-sleeping may promote independence in kids.
- "Hoverparenting" can damage a child's resilience.
- Finnish children, who rank among the highest academic achievers, enjoy multiple recesses a day.
- Our obsession with self-esteem may limit a child's potential.

Instead of being merely the receiver of the parents' psychological and spiritual legacy, children function as ushers of the parents' development. Parents unwittingly pass on an inheritance of psychological pain and emotional shallowness. To handle the behavior that results, traditional books on parenting abound with clever techniques for control and quick fixes for dysfunction. In Dr. Shefali Tsabary's conscious approach to parenting, however, children serve as mirrors of their parents' forgotten self.

Dr. Klein reveals the new science behind drivers such as resilience, self-reliance, self-regulation, and empathy that are more critical to success than simple intelligence.

Steve Biddulph's Raising Girls is both a guidebook and a call to arms for parents.

As a global pandemic shuttered schools across the country in 2020, parents found themselves thrust into the role of teacher — in more ways than one. Not only did they take on remote school supervision, but after the murder of George Floyd and the ensuing Black Lives Matter protests, many also grappled with the responsibility to teach their kids about social justice — with few resources to guide them.

Many of us know we're putting too much pressure on our kids - and on ourselves - but how do we get off this crazy train? We want our children to succeed, to be their best, and to do their best, but what if they are not on board? A few years ago, Ned Johnson and Bill Stixrud started noticing the same problem from different angles: even high-performing kids were coming to them acutely stressed and lacking any real motivation. Many complained that they had no real control over their lives.

such good information!
loved this book! it was so beautiful learning the diffrent ways cultures parent! my favorite part was learning the diffrent ways of schooling. In the process of listening to this book to potentially brighten my children futures, I myself took lessons and learned about my way of upbringing.
The reason for the 4 star is because I felt it was biased twords japanese upbringing and sort of comparing it to American. I could be wrong, it's just a loose opinion I formed.
but ether way the japanese upbringing is beautiful and I've learn alot from it :).
great book, I would for sure recommend 100%

I enjoyed the book but not the narration
This was a tough listen because the narrator speaks softly and "breathy". I enjoyed the book, but not the narration.
