London, september 1978: Den bulgarske dissident Georgi Markov bliver angrebet i fuldt dagslys på Waterloo Bridge med en paraply, der tilsyneladende afgiver gift. Han dør efterfølgende. Det bliver den mest berygtede uopklarede drabssag under Den Kolde Krig.
Mange år senere bliver den unge journalist Ulrik Skotte kontaktet og får rystende nye oplysninger om en dansk statsborger, der menes at stå bag drabet – en spion med kodenavnet Piccadilly, der arbejdede for den bulgarske efterretningstjeneste.
