In this sweeping and powerful debut, Farmer creates a complicated and moving interrogation of the corrupting power of privilege and America’s troubled relationship with race. Though a historical novel, PALE nonetheless achieves a strong contemporary feel on par with the work of Tayari Jones. At the same time, Farmer mastered the creeping, lyrical disquiet of the best Southern writers, a remarkable attention to the domestic, and a damning engagement with our current political moment.
