5 True Tales of Gunslingers, Desperados and Lawmen

Do you like true stories of the Wild West? You should love these tales of outlaws, gunslingers and adventurers then. You may not have heard much about some of these bad guys, but they were real, ruthless outlaws and all had their "15 minutes of fame", leaving trails of death and mayhem behind them. Most did not live to an old age, on average just 35 years old, and those that did survive longer were probably in jail. These tales romp along with plenty of action and recreate the atmosphere of this exciting and dangerous era in America's history using the vernacular of the times. Whilst the events that took place are primarily true, (as far as we know), the author has used a certain amount of creative license regarding what may, or may not, have been spoken by the characters to add flavor to the stories. They are intended to move rapidly with fast talking characters, plenty of action and fun to read and are not meant to be biographical. *Tom Horn - Assassin for Hire Tom Horn was a detective, deputy sheriff, soldier, scout, hired gun, outlaw, and a cold blooded killer for hire. He charged $500 to $600 for each cattle rustler he shot and reputedly killed 17 men, tracking down dozens more working for the Pinkerton agency as a roving gunman. He once said "Killing men is my specialty. I look at it as a business proposition, and I think I have a corner on the market." Whilst waiting for his execution for the killing of a 14 year old boy, he wrote an autobiography of his career as a killer, and other adventures, including his role in the capture of Geronimo. *Kid Curry and The Wild Bunch The famous 'hole in the wall' was located in a pass in Wyoming and home to a myriad of outlaw gangs that rampaged through the state; Black Jack Ketchum's train robbers, Bob Lee's cattle rustlers and the Wild Bunch led by Butch Cassidy. Harvey Alexander Logan, (soon to be known as Kid Curry) was a key member of the gang and a ruthless gunman. During at least five separate shootings, he is thought to have killed up to nine officers of the law and two more men in different incidents. Pursued by Pinkerton agents it was only a matter of time before fate caught up with him. *Wild Bill Doolin - Killer with a Smile William 'Bill' Doolin could joke his way out of most tight situations, but when the chips were down and his own life was at stake he could prove to be as cold hearted as any man in the Wild West. His "Robin Hood' image endeared him to many folk who were known to help him get out of tight spots on occasions. From the ashes of the Dalton-Doolin gang he formed the "Oklamombres", more famously known as the "Wild Bunch" and for the next three years terrorized the states of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansa, relentlessly robbing trains, stagecoaches and banks. *Johnny Ringo - Suicide or Murder? Johnny Ringo, became a member of the "Cowboys of Cochise County" gang and gained a reputation for being the most violent of them all, even though it included the likes of the Clanton boys A participant in numerous gunfights, he was not personally involved in the famous shootout at the OK corral, but the gang swore an oath to kill the Earp brothers in retaliation using blood drawn from his arm. At one time known as the 'King of the Cowboys' he was found shot through the head in 1893. Was he murdered or did he put a bullet through his own brain? *Sam Bass - The Kind Hearted Outlaw Sam Bass may not have been one of the most famous outlaws of the Wild West, but he and his gang were responsible for one of the biggest train robberies in the USA up till that time - $60,000 in gold $20 pieces..!
