Nate was falling through a warm cloud of morphine. There were voices all around him, people touching him, something being wrapped around his head, something placed over his legs and arms. He barely knew what was going on.

He just knew that he was a monster. Now the entire school knew and he was lying in a hospital bed with nothing, not a single shred of dignity left, and the one boy who cared was the same boy he’d been tormenting since they were in kindergarten.

Caleb couldn’t turn away from someone in need. Nate was just a prankster who pushed him in the hall and called him names. Sure, it hurt, but it was harmless stuff. He’d never leave the boy to die in the middle of the wash.
