Acerca de esta escucha

Why do serial killers kill?

Out of the Mouths of Serial Killers is as close as you will ever come to discovering the answer...and in the killer’s own words!

In this one-of-a-kind audiobook, author Mary Brett corresponded with some of America’s most evil convicted serial killers and asked just one question: Why? Their return letters give an insightful look into the dark mind of each killer. The listener also will be able to scrutinize direct quotes, unedited, from interrogation statements, trial testimony, media interviews, and parole hearing inquests.

More than 70 serial killers are included in the audiobook, some only known to the unfortunate victims’ family, friends, and community, while others are the most infamous in the annals of serial killers. All bios feature the crime, the capture, the victims, and background facts.

Mixed Reviews

Implying that justice can only be reserved for those who are the victims of a violent crime is to ignore the reality of the complexity of life, in that in too many cases it is the perpetrator of violent crimes who are also victims of violent crimes themselves; and that life cannot be drawn into neatly cut sections as we wish. Protect the victims, rehabilitate if possible, imprison when we have to and put to death those we must. We should not be ending a book about serial killers by implying the only way to provide justice to a serial killer is by killing them. There are also some cases where there are mitigating circumstances, such as Ed Gein, Richard Chase, Albert Fish, Herbert Mullen. These men were clinically insane, mentally ill with their brains telling them horrible things that were not there. Not every case can be judged the same.

Good argument for the death penalty

Good, logical discussion of the importance to society of having and using the death penalty.

Not bad, worth a read.

it was good and provided a lot of info I didn't know about. there were a few that are not serial killers. That being said, worth a read. it's like baseball cards for serial killers.

Good breakdown of the crime and history of the person

I enjoyed the breakdown of each individual in the book. Their history and the details of their crimes was straightforward and research based.

The organization of the book seemed a bit scattered. It was unclear while listening if they were organized alphabetical, geographically, or by severity of their crimes.

Misleading

This book does not lend itself to audio. It’s advertised as having many responses to the author’s letters to killers, but more than not, she lists people who died before her letters were sent, just pulling a few facts from other sources. The ones who do respond either turn down her request or provide nothing of interest. Nothing compelling here, extremely superficial. Her writing format is extremely awkward when converted to audio, and the convention of saying all dates in Number format is not helpful.

Not worth the credit

The reading was horrible. The story line was just as bad. Too much redundant information. Not enough “story” horrible decision picking this book

Tediously boring without substance

The title does not match the book, as it implies you’ll be hearing from mostly the killers’ side. What the author actually does is include a sentence or two about whatever context she feels like, and briefly goes over the killers’ crimes. It dragged and was boring. It offers no further insight into these people, and read like someone wanting a cash grab with as little effort possible. The narrator was decent though.
