Acerca de esta escucha
It's now been over 150 years since ASPCA agents, at the direction of founder Henry Bergh, rescued little Mary Ellen Wilson from her abusive New York tenement home back in 1874. It's also been over 25 years since Eric A. Shelman and Stephen Lazoritz, M.D. released Out of the Darkness: The Story of Mary Ellen Wilson, which remains the only book about the little girl's case.
They are the only people in the entire world who were able to secure a copy of the original court transcripts for the prosecution of Mary Ellen's evil foster mother, Mary Connolly. They take that privilege seriously, so felt an update might be in order. To that end, they introduced a celebratory foreword written by Eric A. Shelman, and have included some additional photographs and drawings in this book. They hope you find it worth your time.
Also, with Eric taking over the narration for this special anniversary release, it adds another reason to celebrate.
(The previous edition is narrated by Deb Thomas, and will continue to be available with that book, originally released in print form in 1999.) We hope you enjoy living the "story of Mary Ellen" again.
We wanted to tell the tale in a dramatic format so the emotion of what took place could be felt by the listeners. Some critics have deemed this work to be historic fiction, but we dispute that.
We call it "creative nonfiction" because while some conversations and meetings were re-created from testimony and transcripts, if you finished this book and somebody asked you to tell them the story of Mary Ellen Wilson, everything you would tell them would be true. Period.
Enjoy this, and please, tell a friend and leave a review when you're done—that's always nice. Thank you, Eric A. Shelman and Stephen Lazoritz, M.D.

What to Expect When You're Dead chronicles the ways ancient peoples answered questions such as: How to achieve a good death and afterlife? What's the best way to dispose of a body? Do the dead face a postmortem judgement—and where do they end up? Do the dead have bodies in the afterlife—and can they eat, drink, and have sex? And what can the living do to stay on good terms with the nonliving?

Historia
This is a tale of pursuit through the kitchens of New York City at the turn of the century. By the late nineteenth century, it seemed that New York City had put an end to the outbreaks of typhoid fever that had so frequently decimated the city's population. That is until 1904, when the disease broke out in a household in Oyster Bay, Long Island. Authorities suspected the family cook, Mary Mallon, of being a carrier. But before she could be tested, the woman, soon to be known as Typhoid Mary, had disappeared.

Historia
In New York City, in April of 1874, a most unusual event took place. A severely abused nine-year-old girl named Mary Ellen Wilson became the first child in America to be rescued from an abusive home. She had been beaten, burned, slashed with scissors, locked in a closet, and had never been outside of her tenement home in over 7 years. Thanks to the concern and dedication of a missionary named Etta Wheeler, the child was finally saved from her cruel captors.

Historia
Shortly before dusk on November 3, 1870, just as the ferryboat El Capitan was pulling away from its slip into San Francisco Bay, a woman clad in black emerged from the shadows and strode across the crowded deck. Reaching under her veil, she drew a small pistol and aimed it directly at a well-dressed man sitting quietly with his wife and children. The woman fired a single bullet into his chest. “I did it and I don’t deny it,” she said when arrested shortly thereafter. “He ruined me and my daughter.”
