Corin Cadence finally has a firm reason to believe his brother, Tristan, is still alive. Unfortunately, finding more information isn’t going to be easy. Tristan appears to be entangled with a clandestine organization that calls themselves Whispers. And Corin’s last brush with the Whispers didn’t exactly end well.

As much as he wants to follow that lead, Corin has more pressing problems to deal with. Sera is still suffering from a mysterious malady that has stolen her voice and her magic. Corin knows that a portion of that is his fault, and he’s determined to fix it. His mother is still off in another country, and there are growing odds that she’s involved with a conspiracy to overthrow the visages.

Corin has also been branded with a new magical mark on his right hand - one that even veteran climbers don’t seem to recognize. He’s going to need to figure out how it works, otherwise it could be more of a vulnerability than an asset.

Corin still hasn’t finished his first year at Lorian Heights. If he fails his final exams, he’ll be sent off to the military and lose his chance to investigate his brother’s fate. And finally, there’s the issue of enemies. He might have made a few of them.

The biggest problem? He’s not sure if Jin, once one of his closest companions, is one of them.

well performed, good story

Wish there was more, climatic battle not as epic as last one. Feels like a foundation or bridging book to the overall story.

better than the first book in series. definitely written for future books. well done. sooooo many characters to explore. id be happy if it we're a 40 hour long book!

Worth listening to again... and again

So, it's a story about school and dungeons. You think, "yawn." Heh. Just goes to show that good writing matters. And of course, top-notch reading talent is the icing on the cake.

A spectacular sequel, and a promising prequel

Rowe is doing something that I feel many authors are incapable of. He’s being patient. He’s taking his time, developing his characters, and letting his plot evolve at a pace that makes the reader want so much more. This doesn’t mean the book lacks action, nor that it feels like a slow moving story. Many things are happening, and instead of rushing through the plot to get to the end, Rowe helps you enjoy the journey. Also, Podehl gives another phenomenal performance, further enhancing the the listening experience. Arcane Ascension has quickly become one of my all time favorites, and I eagerly await the next installment in the series.

Intriguing and full of laughter

I enjoyed the performance of this book. It added another dimension to the story. I liked it showing the growth of a young adult into the adult world and into intrigue. Growing up is hard but harder without support and guidance. Through school, the main character reconnected with old friends and made new ones as well as found good mentors to guide him to finding himself . Through all this, Andrew Rowe threw in deprecating humor from the main character on himself which just added another depth to my enjoyment of the book. I can't wait to see how he finally concludes this series. It has been a joy to read/listen to.

Much more interesting than the first book!

I started the series because I very much enjoy story's narrated by Nick Podehl. I felt the first book lacked something vital in the storytelling, the plot had all the basic elements to make for a good fantasy novel it just didn't do it for me. I couldn't tell what it was exactly but the story felt some what disjointed. I finished another series before I decide to give the second book a shot and this went above and beyond my expectations. I am pretty appalled to see so many negative reviews about this book, considering how much growing happened in the creation of this book. Then I read the reviews and it's just the bigots talking about how they don't like that there are people in this book who do not conform to gender norms. That is such a small part of this book and it is a pretty great part. If you are afraid of someone explaining the pronoun they then this book is not right for you. If you are not a bigot then you will most likely enjoy this thrilling ride that this book takes you on. Also was it really that surprising that this book talked about the pronoun they, in the last book we found out the main character is asexual and is exploring a possibility of a gay romantic relationship? I think this is an amazing book for youths and adults who like fantasy novels. It is fun, exciting, and how often are you going to find books that have so much queerness. I loved it.

this book

I loved this book and everything that goes along with it. I am sooo glad book 3 is out.

Better editing this time

Still a good series, works the same themes as the previous book, don’t start with this one. The first book was gently edited for content, the first book had a recurring sentence,’Tristan had been in a mock tower during school,but I never got the chance’. Seriously like 5 times. Which While not completely extraneous and served to underline how he felt cheated/disadvantaged/etc by being pulled out of school early certainly did not need to be repeated so many times.
Anyway the editing got better, the story more streamlined

Story was very entertaining and really liked the characters. Looking forward to more books in the series.
