Société de pensée, ordre initiatique, communauté fraternelle ou simple réseau politique, la franc-maçonnerie demeure environnée d'ombres, de secrets et de fantasmes.
Née au XVIIIe siècle, attachée à des rites et des symboles, la franc-maçonnerie française a aussi fait place à l'esprit des Lumières. Au XIXe siècle, elle s'est impliquée dans la vie du pays, exprimant des conceptions civiques et politiques pour devenir, entre 1870 et 1940, une véritable "Église de la République".
Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, elle s'est enfin définie jusqu'à nos jours comme une puissance morale, défendant la tolérance, la dignité humaine, la liberté de l'esprit.
