Acerca de esta escucha

Is she crazy, or the family’s black sheep?

In Not That Sweet, Stephanie candidly shares her story of growing up in a chaotic home, shaped by a police sergeant father seeking to “fix” her defiance and anger at home by sending her away. As she navigates her unconventional childhood, listeners are invited to explore a pressing question: Is she a ‘troubled teen,’ reacting to an unhealthy environment, or both?

Through the narrative, Stephanie examines the complexities of her family and social dynamics, including strained relationships with her parents and siblings, invisibility at school, the labels she’s been given and the places she’s been. Each chapter reflects on her journey of resilience and personal growth, providing listeners with a thoughtful exploration of self-discovery and identity.

Not That Sweet chronicles Stephanie's evolution from an uncertain childhood to an empowered adulthood, emphasizing the importance of setting boundaries and reclaiming one's sense of self. Her story offers a relatable and encouraging perspective for anyone ready to take radical self responsibility and find one’s place in the world.

Brave & honest

Not That Sweet is a raw and courageous exploration of navigating life as the "black sheep." The author’s vulnerability shines through as she unpacks complex topics like family dynamics, self-worth and reclaiming her voice. This book invites readers to reflect on their own paths toward self-love and authenticity. I think this book would be especially of interest for anyone who felt like they were made an outcast by their own parents as a child, or if they were ever pitted against their siblings.

While the narrative was powerful, I found the timeline a bit disjointed at times. I was left curious about her current relationship with her parents and siblings and whether the past issues were ever addressed.

Despite these minor critiques, Stephanie’s honesty and strength are inspiring. 💜

Powerful Memoir

The author shares childhood experiences that could easily break a person apart. She boldly embraces her vulnerability in sharing these stories. The beauty of the book is that the author finds her way through all the turmoil, takes her power back and lives an authentic life. It’s a hopeful story for those who have lived through dysfunctional families, or been labeled the black sheep. So very relatable.

What a story

I personally enjoyed listening to the author herself read her story on the audio book, as she was present for her memories. It made it easier to follow along the many different events that took place, with the tone of voice coming from herself and all those that played a role in her childhood. Stuff you can’t make up! I am glad this book was written as I could relate in certain ways and it has reminded me to slow down, be more kind, have sympathy for others and most of all; to create space to love. I feel so sorry for children of emotionally abusive parents to have to go through such tough situations. We bully because we’ve been bullied but, it’s up to us to be the change we wish to see in the world. It breaks my heart when people treat others with belittling connotation. However, I am impressed Stephanie Thoma would rise above her wounds and fears to write about her journey as a child. To show us all that just because that happened, it doesn’t have to define us. We can set out into the world and rewrite our story line, the one we get to create ❤️ Massive congratulations on this release. I look forward to future writings of whatever else she wishes to share with us!!! All the Blessings 🐢
