With his family caught in the crosshairs of a group of brutal killers, Detective Cork O'Connor must solve the murder of a young girl in the latest installment of William Kent Krueger's unforgettable New York Times best-selling series.

During a houseboat vacation on the remote Lake of the Woods, a violent gale sweeps through unexpectedly, stranding Cork and his daughter, Jenny, on a devastated island where the wind has ushered in a force far darker and more deadly than any storm.

Amid the wreckage, Cork and Jenny discover the body of a teenage girl. She wasn't killed by the storm, however; she'd been bound and tortured before she died. Nearby, underneath a tangle of branches, they also find a baby boy, hungry and dehydrated, but still very much alive. Powerful forces intent on securing the child pursue them to the isolated Northwest Angle, where it's impossible to tell who among the residents is in league with the devil, but Cork understands that to save his family he must solve the puzzle of this mysterious child whom death follows like a shadow.

I really have enjoyed his Cork O'Connor series. I have a few more in this series to listen to, but I have enjoyed quite a few already. Love the nature aspect very much.

William Kent Krueger is a favorite of mine.

All of Krueger's books give such detailed vivid descriptions of the landscapes of his stories. Easy reads, nothing complicated.

I didn’t like this story as much as previous Cork O’Connor stories. Roses obsession with religion got really old.

After Heaven’s Keep, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue the Cork O’Connor series—but Vermilion Drift brought me back, and Northwest Angle sealed the deal. This installment is a gripping blend of survival, mystery, and emotional healing, reminding me why I fell in love with this series in the first place.

Still reeling from the loss of Jo, Cork O’Connor plans a houseboat vacation in the Northwest Angle region of the Lake of the Woods, hoping to bring his family some peace. But nature has other plans. A violent storm separates them and leaves their boats damaged. In the chaos, Cork and his eldest daughter, Jenny, discover the body of a woman who clearly didn’t die from the storm—and a baby who was left behind.

From there, the tension rises sharply. Cork and Jenny are thrown into a deadly situation involving a secretive cult, an isolated community, and a killer who doesn’t want the truth uncovered. The wilderness setting is both beautiful and menacing, adding to the suspense throughout the story.

Krueger once again blends deeply personal stakes with a complex, layered mystery. The emotional weight of Jo’s absence is felt in every chapter, but the resilience of the O’Connor family shines through. The father-daughter dynamic between Cork and Jenny adds real heart to the narrative.

As expected David Chandler continues to give an outstanding performance to this series. He is the voice of Cork O'Connor.

Suspenseful, emotional, and beautifully written

This is the 12th book in the series that I have listened to. William Kent Krueger's writing style is amazing. He paints a very beautiful and evocotive picture with his words. He has obviously done a lot of research, and is well acquainted with Northern Minnesota. The characters are well developed and believable. There is always a lot going on in the stories that keeps me gripped until the end. Cork O'Connor has been through a lot, including losing his wife, Jo, (I'm still upset with the author about that) and, given the number of books in the series, he's not done.

it's refreshing to read books without grammatical and sentence structure issues, which are distracting for me and are so prevalent these days.

Now to the narrator; David Chandler is amazing. He does such a good job differentiating the different character's voices and injecting the right amount of emotion into the story.

In conclusion, I highly recommend this series to one and all.
