She spent her summers playing nude in the meadow and her winters snowshoeing behind the grandfather she idolized. Despite fierce storms, food shortages, and the occasional drug-and-sex-infused party for visitors, it seemed to be a mostly happy existence. For Michelle, however, now long separated from Cea's father, there was one crucial element missing: a man. When Cea was five, Michelle took her on the road with a new boyfriend. As the trio set upon a series of ill-fated adventures, Cea began to question both her highly unusual world and the hedonistic woman at the centre of it - questions that eventually evolved into an all-consuming search for a more normal life. Finally, in her early teens, Cea realized she would have to make a choice as drastic as the one her grandparents once had in order to save herself.

While a successful international modeling career offered her a way out of the wilderness, Cea discovered that this new world was in its own way daunting and full of challenges. Great story telling

Cea did a wonderful job telling her story with brutal honesty. I often enjoy reading of others who survived hard, unconventional childhoods and this book didn't disappoint.
My only small complaint is the authors voice was a little monotone.

Great read!!

I loved the fact that the author read this book, she is a natural narrator! The story is truly brought to life in this performance. Honestly, I think I may have always romanticized this lifestyle, now, after all these years, I certainly have gained a new perspective. I really appreciate the honest insight to all that the author went through. The book was well written and well read! I am just thrilled with the story, it was heartwarming and touching as well as powerfully honest . I highly recommend this book!

Good memoir by a good writer

At first I thought it was a bit slow moving & not what I was expecting. (To be honest, I'm not sure what I expected). After I got through a few chapters & into the story, it was a good book. She writes well and I also enjoy when the author narrates as well as Cea does. Looking forward to her follow up of "Nearly Normal" next.

I loved it. Definitely a different way to be raised. She did an excellent job being the author and the narrator.

Such a great story!!!!

Wow. Although hard to listen to some of the details without wanting to cry, I really enjoyed this Memoir. I'm so glad Cea is at peace and happy, I couldn't help but cheer on that little girl the whole book.

amazing story

this is an amazing story that made me feel the entire range of emotions, ending in me fighting back tears for the final hour. it makes me think how lucky I am to have the family I have and how my life and the authors have had many similarities.

Interesting & captivating story

Story is well written, captivating and keeps you hooked by the unconventional lifestyle and self discovery.

Normal

I’m not sure what normal is anymore. Perhaps typical is a better word but reading (listening) about living in the bush was interesting to me. I find that we are all in this life together trying to have a decent life. It was informative, surprising, and entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed CIA’s story.

Beautiful told

I am sad for all the children who got hurt by adults, and I am sad for all the adults who got hurt as children. As a care taker of some of these adults it encourages me to see the hurt child in them and just love them without judgement

A great story of a very unusual childhood

I liked that the author talked alot about her feelings throughout childhood and as an adult.
