Matt Teeson and Tate Matthews long-term friends and partners in a ranch in New Mexico want to live in peace and grow the ranch. George Hamilton wants to become the biggest rancher in New Mexico, he needs Matt’s ranch to achieve this. Julia Hamilton, George’s daughter, has trained as a doctor. She wants to serve the population around Willow Creek. No men, including Matt and George, believe a woman can possibly be a doctor. This dooms her practice from the start. Mangas Mescal the Apache chief wants to preserve his tribe’s lifestyle of living off the land. He sees Tate and George as obstacles to this.
Not everyone will achieve their goals, and not everyone will survive.
Life should be easier. Why can’t everyone get along and not be so greedy? Matt thought as he looked for movement in the sparse yellow grass over the sights of his Winchester.
“How're you doing there, Tate?” He asked of his best friend and partner without taking his eyes off where he had last seen the Apache. “I can’t help you until the Apache have gone.”
Tate grunted. “And I'm going to be no help to you.”
