The skids scraped against the hard granite as the helicopter settled onto the barren peninsula. My fingers were shaking so badly from the adrenaline, it was hard to unbuckle my chest straps. Then, with one step down the ladder, I left the modern world and the rest of humanity behind.

I expected the land to be harsh and unforgiving, but I didn't expect that it would be so breathtaking.

Nor that I would fall instantly in love with it.

The northern wilderness kicked my butt repeatedly throughout the next three months, but each time it picked me back up, staggered me with its beauty, and showed me again how truly resilient I am.

My Arctic adventure could easily have been a grueling struggle, but by putting my trust in myself and the land, it instead became a beautiful journey to a deeper sense of connection and belonging.

In her debut memoir Never Alone: A Solo Arctic Survival Journey, Woniya shares how months of starving by herself in the Arctic wilderness brought more healing than suffering, and led to a deep sense of belonging and peace. Her story affirms the incredible strength of the human spirit and shows us that strength comes in many surprising forms. I watched both seasons that you were on Alone and have finally read your book.I admire you for your skills on the show.The book was well written and entertaining.I highly recommend this story.

Didn’t want the book to end

This book was a page turned for me. Not only was it gripping but I felt like I was learning new skills while reading as well as getting in touch with a deep sense of a way I want to live in the world. Also so great that the author narrates herself!

Eye and Heart Opening Story

I am not a survivalist and feel very grateful to have such an intimate view of Woniya's experience on Alone season 6. I finished her story feeling deeply encouraged and emotionally bolstered, as well as flat-out amazed at her skill, clarity, soulfulness and determination.

Beautifully shared, an everyday hero

Woniya is an everyday hero — and not because she does what everyday people do! She simply is a real person who experiences life through her surroundings, and as a result is able to embrace what most humans consider suffering. There is such beauty in the full and complete awareness of the world, and herself within it. She tells her story in such a raw and engaging way.

It’s a little crunchy

It’s got some hippy, crunchy, spiritual vibes. It is more memoir than adventure. I enjoyed the book and I thought the reading was exceptionally well done for an author. Her accomplishments are impressive! I will read the sequel.

Living with nature

I love that Woniya did not fight nature or try to conquer it. That she took her time to listen to what was being asked of her out there and to her own body. An engaging listen the whole way through and at the end I wanted there to be more.

Outstanding

This book touches a way of being that is largely lost to the modern world. 

Packed with wisdom , insights and deeply real experiences that touched me very deeply and left me longing for more.
