Phil ist dreißig Jahre alt, arbeitslos und leidenschaftlicher Gamer. Seine einzige Einnahmequelle ist das Schreiben von Artikeln – wenn er genügend Inspiration spürt, um seinen alles andere als beliebten Blog zu bereichern. Kein Wunder also, dass er Probleme hat, über die Runden zu kommen. Sogar seine Frau hat inzwischen sowohl ihren Glauben an ihn als auch ihre Geduld mit ihm verloren.
Eines Tages wird Phils Gehirn auf rätselhafte Weise durch eine mysteriöse "Wetware" bereichert. In seinen Kopf scheint eine Spieloberfläche implantiert worden zu sein, die dafür sorgt, dass er die gesamte Welt durch die Augen eines RPG-Spielers betrachten kann. Jetzt entdeckt Phil die Statistiken seines wirklichen Lebens. Dabei stellt er fest, dass diese verdammt unterdurchschnittlich sind. Seine Beweglichkeit liegt bei 4 Punkten, seine Stärke bei 6 Punkten und sein Durchhaltevermögen bei 3 Punkten. Die Fertigkeit, in der er am weitesten fortgeschritten ist - und das kommt wenig überraschend - ist das Spielen von Computerspielen.
Dank der Statistiken und Meldungen des Systems erkennt Phil, wie viele Fehler er bisher im Leben gemacht hat. Doch das allein reicht nicht aus, und es kommt ohnehin zu spät: Seine Frau hat endgültig genug und lässt ihn ohne Geld und sinnvolle Aufgabe allein zurück.
Zum Glück können die Statistiken im wirklichen Leben ebenso gesteigert werden wie die virtuellen. Aber kann das Phil dabei helfen, seine Frau zurückzugewinnen? Seinen Arsch vom Sofa zu schwingen? Macht es ihn durchtrainierter? Oder erfolgreicher? Kann er seine in Computerspielen erworbenen Fähigkeiten endlich einmal im wirklichen Leben einsetzen?
Und schließlich: Kann er herausfinden, wer dieses geheimnisvolle Spiel in sein Gehirn hochgeladen hat? Und wie bitte soll er mit dieser unbekannten, aber augenscheinlich allmächtigen Macht umgehen?
