Na de ontberingen in Rusland belandt het regiment in Italië, waar de kou misschien minder op de loer ligt, maar de verschrikkingen van de oorlog niet minder zijn. Op een heuvel ligt het oeroude klooster van Monte Cassino, vol met de meest kostbare schatten en documenten. Er omheen woedt een vurige veldslag, en de soldaten van het 27e pantserregiment proberen uit alle macht stand te houden op de heuvel. De Deen Børge Pedersen (1917-2012) schreef onder het pseudoniem Sven Hassel veertien romans die allemaal gaan over de belevenissen van het 27e pantserregiment van de Duitse Wehrmacht tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Volgens Hassel zijn de boeken grotendeels autobiografisch, en baseerde hij zijn romans op zijn eigen ervaringen als gedwongen soldaat in het Duitse leger. In de loop der jaren is die bewering door veel experts en journalisten in twijfel getrokken. Hierdoor wordt Hassel, die van alle Deense auteurs wereldwijd de meeste boeken verkocht, in eigen land nauwelijks nog gelezen. Hassels verhalen over de oorlog worden getypeerd door een niets ontziende beschrijving van wreedheden en gruweldaden, volgens Hassel een manier om vooral de jeugd ervan te overtuigen dat oorlog iets verschrikkelijks is, dat koste wat kost voorkomen moet worden.

I know this fear, creeping up the spine. It will mean certain death if they run just one second too soon. How we get up, I don't know, the legs move automatically. The tank wiggles over the hole and crushes everything in it. Then it rumbles on.

At least one battalion of flame-throwers is swinging around like a pack of crazy wild boars. Long, flaming red tongues of fire are hissing from the towers, charring every living thing. From the GPU-prison stream shoals of red prisoners. A barrage of incredible dimensions is hammering down behind the Germans. It seems like the Russians have guessed that they are pondering an escape and want to stop it with an impenetrable wall of fire, spreading as far as the eye can see.

The tracer streak projectiles shoot out of the muzzle. Bewildered shapes flee in panic. - What a bunch of devils, the Russian lieutenant exclaims in admiration.
