April 1945: Unteroffizier Heinrich Peller wird als Angehöriger der eiligst aus dem Boden gestampften Infanterie-Division "Potsdam" General Wencks 12. Armee unterstellt. Das Oberkommando der Wehrmacht wirft diese in den Endkampf um die Elbe und Berlin.
Während die US-Armee aus dem Westen an die Elbe stürmt, rückt die Ostfront an Berlin heran. Die Rote Armee setzt zur Einkesselung der deutschen Hauptstadt an. In diesem militärisch unmöglichen Szenario findet sich General Wencks 12. Armee im Zwischenraum zwischen West- und Ostfront wieder.
Uffz Peller erlebt den Wahnsinn der letzten Kriegswochen hautnah mit. Die deutschen Truppen werden gnadenlos zusammengeschossen, indes versuchen verzweifelte Offiziere, den Widerstand zu organisieren. Um jeden Meter Boden wird erbittert gerungen. Peller irrt als Versprengter im Stahlgewitter umher und gelangt von einer Einheit zur nächsten, die kurz darauf vernichtet wird. Stets entgeht er knapp dem Tod.
Und dann ergeht der Befehl, zum Entsatzangriff auf Berlin anzusetzen, um die drohende Einkesselung zu verhindern. Noch einmal soll Wenck alle Kräfte versammeln, um den Untergang des Dritten Reichs zu verhindern. Den Preis für dieses sinnlose Unterfangen zahlen einfache Soldaten wie Uffz Peller und seine Kameraden ...
