Donny Chambers dreaded the end of the school term. It promised to be a long, empty summer. One of his best friends moved away and the other had taken up with the town bullies. His dad had pawned their television months before and went on a binge after the Brooklyn Dodgers won the World Series. Though Donny couldn’t put his finger on it, something about his twin sister was off and he missed the closeness that they once shared, before she got sick… before she needed special attention… before she got weird. As predicted, with the exception of that one extraordinary week, it was a long, empty summer. Caught in the middle of his parents’ separation, lonely and left to his own devices, Donny had graduated from mischief to misdemeanors. His mother, alone to raise and support the family, didn't deserve the worry he created by running away, but not knowing how to explain, he dismissed the idea of a note and hopped an eastbound freight train. Donny quickly learned that fantasizing about the world beyond the small Kansas farming community is one thing, surviving in it is another. In his wildest dreams, he could not have imagined that chance, destiny, or his reckless naiveté would lead him many miles from home and to the one person who could explain the unimaginable transformation of his sister… what she was becoming… and that she was not the only one. If he had known that by running away he would find things that were sadly missing from his life at the price of putting the lives of his loved ones in jeopardy, would he do it again? But, he couldn’t have known… because he wasn’t one of them.
