Mourir n'est pas une partie de plaisir... mais c'est une manière de gagner sa vie.
Mickey7 est un Consommable : un employé jetable d'une expédition humaine envoyée sur Niflheim, un monde de glace, pour le coloniser. Dès qu'une mission paraît trop dangereuse - voire suicidaire -, l'équipage se tourne vers lui. À la mort d'une version, un nouveau corps est régénéré, sa mémoire pratiquement intacte. Et après six morts, Mickey7 a bien compris pourquoi son poste restait le seul disponible de l'expédition quand il l'a accepté...
Et puis, au cours d'une mission de routine, Mickey7 est porté disparu et présumé mort. Le temps qu'il regagne la base de la colonie, étonnamment aidé par une forme de vie locale, il est trop tard : un nouveau clone, Mickey8, occupe déjà son poste. Et l'idée de Consommables "en double" est une abomination aux yeux de tous. S'ils sont pris, ils finiront probablement tous deux dans le recycleur à protéines...
Pendant ce temps, les conditions de vie sur Niflheim se compliquent, surtout lorsque cette étrange forme de vie s'intéresse à ses nouveaux voisins. En fin de compte, le sort des deux espèces dépendra peut-être de Mickey7... à condition, bien sûr, qu'il ne meure pas pour de bon.
