Mickey7 è un Sacrificabile: un dipendente ‘usa e getta’ di una spedizione umana inviata a colonizzare il mondo ghiacciato di Niflheim. Ogni volta che una missione diventa troppo pericolosa, l’equipaggio si rivolge a Mickey. Dopo la morte di una sua iterazione, un nuovo corpo viene rigenerato con la maggior parte dei ricordi intatti. Durante una missione esplorativa, Mickey7 viene dato per morto.
Grazie all’aiuto inaspettato della vita aliena del posto, riesce a tornare alla base, solo per scoprire che il suo clone, Mickey8, è già stato creato. L’idea di avere dei Sacrificabili duplicati è universalmente disapprovata e, se saranno catturati, verranno probabilmente gettati nel riciclatore di proteine: ecco quindi che dovrà tenere nascosto il suo doppio al resto della colonia. Nel frattempo, la vita su Niflheim è in continuo peggioramento: l’atmosfera è inadatta agli esseri umani, il cibo scarseggia e le specie autoctone sono sempre più curiose nei confronti dei loro nuovi vicini, curiosità che spinge il comandante Marshall a temerli. In ultima analisi, la sopravvivenza di entrambe le forme di vita è nelle mani di Mickey7. Sempre che riesca a non morire per sempre.
