He was a hero lost in an evil cause. But I was a female. Despite his training or allegiance to carry out his orders, he had a primal instinct to protect a woman. The sight of me, not quite eighteen, sparked that instinct, and he gave in to it. In my eyes, he saw himself for what he was and what he was doing and just broke. But the occupation is more than the famine, and allegiances to their respective countries would force them to choose.

Years later, Maria Kovalenko, now a renowned author, lecturer and member of the Board of Regents at the Smithsonian Institution, receives an invite to speak at a charity auction in Chicago from Leonid Kozlov, the former Russian Battalion Commander in Kharkiv, whom she hasn't seen since he abandoned her 4 years ago. Leonid is now a wealthy and powerful man, a criminal boss. She shouldn't go. But she has to see him. In Chicago, histories and long-held vengeance spills over from the past to the present in a scalding manner.
