Folklore Comes to Life in this Middle Grade Story

Filled with interesting characters and set in a town where folklore comes to life, Malamander is the perfect choice when you need a middle grade fantasy book that is different than wizards and magic.

Thoughts:
I was in need of a fun fantasy middle grade book when I happened upon this one through the recommendation of another book blogger. I knew I didn’t necessarily have time to ‘read’ it so I picked up the audio version instead. What I found was a delightful story in a quirky little town full of folklore and interesting characters. From Lady Kraken who never leaves her room in the hotel, to Fishhook man – who has a hook for a hand, to a cat that talks…or does he?

The main story revolves around Herbie Lemon who has been hired by Violet Parma to find her parents, who were lost 12 years ago. Herbie has a job a the Grand Nautilus Hotel and he has found, returned, or kept various lost items, but never been asked to find parents who have been missing for years. Incidentally, Herbie gets paid, not by money, by being able to keep items that have been lost for over 100 years and have not been claimed by anyone. The themes in the book are similar to others you might find within middle grade – friendships, discovery of what is out there in the world as well as discovery of what is important to you and the content of your character.

Audio Book Review:
Another terrific audio book find. Narrated by Will E. Watt, we are shown not only a variety of voices and accents, but a range of emotions as he goes through the story. While listening I was able to feel the anxiety during intense dramatic or action scenes, but also able to sense the main character’s pain during one scene when he feels he might have been played the fool by Violet. A couple of the voices quite amazed me too as they sounded so different than his regular speaking voice that I took the time to listen to how he carefully changed his voice to best fit those specific characters. Will E. Watt really sells the story and was a excellent choice to portray Herbie Lemon. Through the narration, I almost felt like I was actually at the quirky town of Eerie-on-Sea and could see the mist as it rolled in. In addition to the spot-on narration, the quality of the audio production as a whole by Candlewick on Brilliance Audio was almost crystal clear.

All in all a delightful book to read and comes with an eye-catching cover that includes a few of the whimsical elements from the book. The only negative being that the book apparently has a few illustrations in it that I am not able to see when listening to it via audio.

Very good book, great narrator

I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was well written. I especially enjoyed the narrator he was fantastic. I’ll definitely look for more of his stuff

Herbie found his way to my heart quickly and so did Violet. GREAT story! LOVED narrator’s voice!

AMAZING

I liked how the story really pull an into it and makes me want to listen/ read more and I don’t like reading that much so this book really made it fun 😁

Expect the unexpected in Eerie-on-Sea!

I listened to this book because Will Watt is one of my favorite performers. As is often the case, I followed a beloved performer to a new Author and genre and was very pleasantly surprised. This is in the age 8-10 category, which is not something I typically read, but from the very beginning I was captivated by Will's performance and the characters in this story. I really did feel like I was there with Herbie in his lost and found cubby when he discovers Violet for the first time. Will's range of voices and ability to emote with them lends itself to this story perfectly, in spite of the wide range of ages, men and women, and even species.

As the layers are peeled back to reveal the folklore of Eerie-on-Sea, Herbie and Violet take you on an inventive and fun adventure while they learn more about each other and build a friendship. From the quirky shops with amazing items found on the beach to the more sinister characters found lurking in the shadows, this is a place I will visit again!

I look forward to hearing more about the fantastic adventures had by Herbie and Violet as they grow up together and into their detective skills - especially if future installments are narrated by Will M. Watt!!

Excellent creative adventure!

I found this book because Will is a favorite narrator. I was pulled into the story from the very start. The characters are interesting and vividly performed in this intelligent, thoughtful, extremely creative adventure in one of the quirkiest places you will ever visit in a story. Even the locations have a personality as you learn more about the history of the torn and characters in it. I can't wait to read more adventures in the series!

My kids love this and we are listening to it a second time now! They like that it's scary but not tooooo scary. 😍

Repetitive

This story started out fine with a certain charm, warmth, and a very likeable protagonist. Then about mid-way it loses all that, bogs down, and becomes a series of repetitive loops -- Oh No They're After Us! followed by Phew That Was Close! by Oh No They're After Us!, etc. There was no real tension, I got bored and DNF.
