En julio de 1965, las adolescentes Sylvia y Jenny Likens quedaron al cuidado temporal de Gertrude Baniszewski, una madre soltera de mediana edad y sus siete hijos.
La casa de los Baniszewski estaba repleta de niños. Había pocas reglas y una amplia libertad. Por desgracia, el entorno creó una peligrosa jerarquía de Darwinismo social, donde los fuertes se aprovechaban de los débiles.
