Esta novela refiere en esencia al cúmulo de contradicciones que suelen presentarse en casi todos los movimientos insurgentes que se levantan para confrontar al Estado en diversos países. Se plantea una que alcanzó el nivel de crimen atroz en la figura de un líder estudiantil de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Julio César Cortés, a finales de los sesenta.
La obra consta de dos partes. La primera se desenvuelve en el departamento de Santander, en el campamento de un frente guerrillero donde ocurren deserciones y un juicio sumario. Allí se evidencian las diferencias entre sus integrantes, que dan lugar a una profunda reflexión sobre el significado del compromiso político, el desarrollo de la personalidad, la libertad individual y el sentido mismo de la vida que se mantiene a través de toda la novela.
La segunda parte se sitúa en Bogotá y poblaciones vecinas, donde Polidoro Navarrete, uno de los desertores y personaje central de la narración, da inicio a su nueva vida de trepador social, entre su mujer, su amante y sus ambiciones, mientras el excomandante guerrillero Genaro Cañón Cuartas lo busca para su ejecución tras la sentencia. Saber si la ejecución se dará cautiva al lector hasta la última página de esta narración.
Al estar ambientada entre finales de los sesenta y comienzos de los setenta, la novela nos recrea la música, la literatura y la filosofía de la época, que hoy más que nunca cobran vigencia en un país que no ha resuelto las causas de su violencia y que parecen acecharnos todavía con fuerza incontenible.
