Excellent. You won't be disappointed!

I am pleasantly suprised to find a first rate novel after a series of mediocre ones. A great plot, interesting characters, including minor ones, a plot that hung together very well, kept my attention, had terrific plot twists, was believable, well paced, all in all a great novel. Even a good narrator. You won't be disappointed.

Cleo’s narrator fell short

The story was ok but I found myself having a hard time getting into it mainly because of the person performing Cleo’s chapters. She made Cleo sound much younger and whinier than she was supposed to be and didn’t change the influx in her voice much between characters to differentiate them. I felt like it hurt the story.

Disappointing

I have loved all of her books. This was really disappointing… And the narrators voice for the daughter was terrible. Super annoying. Ended up listening at a 1.8 just to finish.

Narration

Story was good, kept me intrigued . Did not like the narration for Cleo…. The narrator did not change tone or voice between characters which made her role/ narration very confusing as to who was speaking. She kept the same monotone voice throughout.

Fabulous!

The voices are well done and bring the story to life. beautiful way to tell about an authentic mother and daughter journey back to love.

Unbelievably good!

I joined a book club and this is the first book I read with them (well… listened to). I didn’t read the summary and just dove in. The title made me anxious it would be touchy feely and about some fictional mother and daughter’s relationship evolution. Honestly… it was, but in such an unexpected way. The storytelling mechanic was really enjoyable - mom starting from the past and moving forward to current, the daughter starting at current and working her way into the future. The allegory of that mechanic alone was brilliant. But then BOOM it’s a mystery!! There’s crime and intrigue, layers, drama, and personalities that feel very real and relatable. The story progresses almost immediately and gets you hooked right away. I had multiple iterations of “oh it’s that guy” or “oh I’m POSITIVE it’s her”. I listened to this while on a work trip; while on the plane on my way home, I realized I had three hours left in the book and I said out loud to my seat mate “I am absolutely on the edge of my seat and have no idea how they could possibly wrap this up in so little time - I am stumped as to what happened!!!” I may actually re-listen ahead of my next book club meetup so I can go with the freshest perspective. I’m eager to hear what nuance I missed or to discover foreshadowing that was previously hidden to me. Brilliant voice acting by the cast, amazing storytelling and world building by the author, and excellent casting by the publisher. No notes. Highly recommend!!!
I will say - trigger warning for folks listening without context like I was, there are some brief but detailed/specific descriptions of sexual assault in this book that I was not prepared for. It ended quickly and didn’t detract from the experience, but it was impactful in a way that may be hard for folks still dealing with the impact of their own trauma.
I also want to note that I found the mother’s story (especially her childhood backstory) to be incredibly compelling. As someone who can relate firsthand to her (albeit fictional) experiences (having had an incredibly sad and trauma filled childhood myself), I found the way the author conveyed the impact of trauma on the mother’s personality, work ethic, and parental style to be incredibly relatable. I found myself taking notes and saying “I need to have my therapist read this book” more than once. I also found myself saying “shit… I get how she feels about her relationship with her daughter” multiple times. Excellent all around. It’s a quick enough listen - what do you have to lose!? Excited for more from this author and this voice cast!

Uneven narration - skip this one

Cassandra Campbell is always good and performs Katrina well. The problem is with the narrator performing Cleo. She is terrible. Her narration nearly ruins the listen. Same last name… related? The book wasn’t as enjoyable as it should have been and I wish I hadn’t used a credit on it.

Fast paced and a thriller

An interesting plot and a fast read. However, some loose ends. No justice or retribution for the despicable men in this story.
