Acerca de esta escucha

A college professor debunks the myths that have infiltrated America's school curricula.

In 1995, James W. Loewen penned the classic work of criticism Lies My Teacher Told Me, a left-leaning corrective that addressed much of what was sanitized and omitted from American history books.

But in the decades that followed, false leftist narratives—as wrong as those they supplanted—have come to dominate American academia and education. Now, in the same spirit but updated for 2024, Wilfred Reilly demolishes the scholastic myths propagated by the left, uncovers fresh angles on “established” events, and turns what we think we know about history upside down. Among the popular lies he debunks:

  • “The ‘Red Scare’ was a moral panic that caught no commies”
  • “Native Americans were peaceful people who spent all day dancing”
  • “European colonialism was—empirically—a no-good, terrible, very bad thing”
  • “The racist ‘Southern Strategy’ turned the South Republican”
  • “The Vietnam War was unpopular and pointless”

Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me sets the record straight on many of these myths, explaining that there actually were communists in Hollywood; that many Native American tribes were cannibals, owned slaves and made them march the Trail of Tears with them; and that history, while almost always bad for Black Americans, was much worse for all of us than we tend to think it was.

Smart, irreverent, and deeply researched, Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me will revolutionize your understanding of history and reveal a new and refreshing way to teach and think about the past.

Supporting data to older claims

Professor Reilly is not covering new ground here. These are common countervailing arguments to old left of center assertions. What Professor Reilly does do is collect the new pertinent data that seldom ever gets equal representation by the wider academic society or the media & drags it into the light much to the consternation of those who wish to sell you their narrative.

Excellent

I love WR. He’s smart and non partisan. He writes well. He’s witty. I’ll buy and read any book he writes.

Solid if a little uneven

Some of the chapters are excellent while others are merely adequate or even incomplete, leaving out potent counterpoints that argue against the author’s claims. Like anyone, myself included, sometimes personal biases blind us to the whole of the evidence. That said, overall this is a good and thought provoking book. My biggest complaint is the narrator’s frequent mispronunciations riddled through the reading. Some were so far off proper pronunciation that it took me several seconds to realize what word was actually intended. This is disruptive to the flow of the book’s arguments, serving as a distraction while my mind races to decipher the pronunciation. While a common complaint for audiobooks, this is a particularly severe example.

Great variety of information

I liked how this book touched on current events, but is more so a deeper dive into the history of these topics. I found it very educational

Setting the record straight

An excellent presentation of facts by a researcher that counters the narrative of advocates. Fifteen word minimum.

I hope the author does not get black listed.

Good job! Excellent research, I followed up on this work and found it strikingly accurate. It is dazzling to have revealed the depths some humans will go to keep power and wealth.

a good criticism

I recommend it as a companion piece with lies my teacher told me. Read both! learn from both!

I suspected it, Now I know

I grew up in a liberal democrat family and school district. as I got older I started to discover there was more to a lot of the things I was taught in school, especially when it came to slavery in this country. this book is very eye opening.

Much Needed Facts

This detailed book is about what really happened in America, we don’t hear about. I didn’t learn much of this in school in the 70’s. I knew there was more to the stories about slavery and the Indians in America we generally hear about now days, but needed to find the truth. Our county school board chairs almost always repeats 1/2 truths of history. They are all one sided. All whites are racist, guilty and the problem to everything.
I say we are only humans no matter color of skin or where we come from.
