Acerca de esta escucha

John Robert Lewis was an American politician and civil-rights leader who served in the United States House of Representatives for Georgia's 5th congressional district from 1987 until his death in 2020 from pancreatic cancer. Lewis served as the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) from 1963 to 1966. This is his remarkable story!

A collection of speeches and (poorly read) quotes

This book starts out with a somewhat lengthy discussion about the origins of black studies programs at US Universities. The author, who also narrates the book, then reads what is essentially a series of quotes by John Lewis. Some are interesting and some are inspiring, as one would expect from a figure like Lewis. But this is not some carefully curated collection of quotes organized in some thoughtful way or with some commentary to provide context - it is essentially a wall of quotes that, without being exactly repeated, still become repetitive, and after 10 minutes or so this section becomes almost maddening. The narration also leaves a lot to be desired - there are frequent stops where the author goes back and re-reads the last word or few words. I don't think I have heard anything re-read this way on audible - ever. But in this book it happens every few minutes. The balance of the book is as best I can tell entirely (I skipped through the last 45 minutes) recorded speeches by John Lewis. I bought this audiobook to learn more about John Lewis, not hear a bunch of speeches by him. There is nothing in the title of the book or the description that reflects what is actually in the recording.
