À travers les pérégrinations de Tchitchikof, c'est un grand tableau social et moral de la Russie de l'époque : le lecteur se retrouve plongé dans un voyage dans le temps époustouflant qui brille par le génie de son auteur dont l'humour et le don pour la caricature servent à merveille ce qu'il définit lui-même comme un grand poème épique, masquant une très réelle satire sociale et politique.
Dans cette œuvre colossale - dont le second tome fut publié à titre posthume - le propos de Gogol est de présenter non pas une âme morte mais au contraire une âme bien vivante, celle de la Russie éternelle.
