Estas preguntas, que brillan intensamente como los bordes exteriores de una supernova, son las que se hace Alicia Gaden mientras toda la vida a su alrededor se convierte en locura y decadencia.
El agua, la sustancia vital de la que depende la supervivencia misma de la Tierra, se ha transformado en un fango espantoso y desagradable, gracias al descuido de una empresa de plásticos en Los Ángeles. Alicia, una estudiante de biología, está disgustada al ver que las personas no solo beben eso, sino que también lo ansían.
La gente que bebe sin pausa la cosa putrefacta está pasando por cambios, es decir, todos se vuelven agresivos en momentos extraños, son propensos a arrebatos violentos, y son perpetuamente groseros, crueles, y no aman otra cosa que salir y atacar personas al azar en la calle quienes reaccionan de la misma manera.
El hecho de entender que ahora está viviendo una película de terror golpea a Alicia como lo haría un camión súper pesado, y el efecto se duplica cuando se encuentra de frente con la realidad de que su familia y amigos ahora tienen la misma mentalidad violenta y sin sentido.
El sentido del deber, el amor por todos y la autopreservación obligan a Alicia a investigar el cambio en el agua y las posibles curas para la enfermedad que actualmente ha atrapado a la mayoría de la población del sur de California.
Resulta que conoce a Jace Booth, otra gran mente en la biblioteca, una estudiante de química quien para sorpresa de Alicia, tampoco se ha visto afectada por la enfermedad que se ha extendido por la mayoría del estado. Alicia une fuerzas con Jace con la esperanza de que puedan encontrar una causa y la cura para la terrible condición antes de que la epidemia alcance lo impensable.
