Acerca de esta escucha
At the shabby boarding house in the rue Neuve-Sainte-Geneviève, petty Madame Vauquer and her tenants wonder at the plight of the aging resident Goriot. Once a well-heeled merchant, Goriot was, at first, afforded special treatment from the Madame. But now something is clearly amiss in his financial affairs, and his increasingly tawdry appearance makes him a subject of ridicule in the household. Some think he lost in the markets, others see him as a lecherous patron of prostitutes, but one thing is clear: his selfless, complete devotion to his two daughters.
As the tragedy of old Goriot is revealed, the shallow values of society come into scrutiny.

Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Historia
This superbly told story brings to life one of the most remarkable rulers––and men––in all of history and conveys the drama of his life and world. The Russia of Peter's birth was very different from the Russia his energy, genius, and ruthlessness shaped. Crowned co-Tsar as a child of ten, after witnessing bloody uprisings in the streets of Moscow, he would grow up propelled by an unquenchable curiosity, everywhere looking, asking, tinkering, and learning, fired by Western ideas.

Honoré de Balzac uses his classic style of detail to describe a most controversial setting in his novel Le Pere Goriot. The story takes place in Paris just after the fall of Napoleon in 1819. The story focuses on three characters, Rastignac, a student who wants to try and make it big in the capital, Vautrin, an interesting and funny character who is also quite mysterious, and the main character, Goriot, that carries a heavy burden that only a loving parent would endure.

Historia
One of the greatest of French novelists, Balzac, trained as a lawyer, was a great judge of human nature. In 1833 he conceived the idea of linking together his novels so that they would comprehend the whole society in a series of books. This plan eventually led to 90 novels and novellas (including more than 2,000 characters) that he called "The Human Comedy". Balzac's huge and ambitious plan drew a picture of the customs, atmosphere, and habits of the bourgeois France.

Balzac’s universally loved novel explores the great theme of money and its effect on the human character. Old Goriot is a lodger at Madame Vauquer’s Parisian boarding house. At first, his wealth inspires respect, but as his circumstances are reduced, he is gradually shunned. He moves into smaller and less desirable rooms in the house, and soon his only remaining visitors are two beautiful young women. The dirty and greedy human nature
Everyone was either disgusting or pathetic. I didn’t feel sorry for Goriot either. He brought it all on himself by raiding foolish children.

Good, provided that:
This is a good book, provided that you do not read it right after you read "War and Peace", because it cannot compete.
The thing about classics is reflection more than the story. I am very surprised that belzac did not spend time to convey to us, his distant children, that Gene loved Goriot deeply. I learned that only in the last chapter. Also how much did Gene loved his mistress? I can't tell after finishing the story.

For a classic, disappointing: bleak and humourless
I'm a big fan of classic 19th c. novels, but this is the first novel by Balzac I've read. It will probably be the last. I found the story mediocre, the writing longwinded, and most of the characters uninteresting. The moral development of the law student Rastignac (sp?) is somewhat interesting as he first is corrupted by and then has his eyes opened to the true nature of 'high society.' But the interminable scenes in the last third of the novel ddepicting Goriot declaring his love for his daughters while they carry on fleecing him down to the shirt on his back simply lose interest. The reading was fine.

Superb Reading
Paul Hecht brings a timeless classic to brilliant life. All of the heartbreaking tragedy and brutal cynicism of one of the greatest novels in all literature become palpable in his dramatic but restrained narration.

Loved it
Well read and easy to follow. Fascinating story about a boarding house in early 19th century France. I listened after listening to an economics book that mentioned this as a reference to the wealth dynamics of recent modern history.

If you read only one Balzac novel, this is it.
Would you listen to Le Pere Goriot again? Why?
Balzac's powers of description are amazing -- and the characters are memorable.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Without doubt the young student Eugène de Rastignac, an attractive but misguidedly ambitious young man -- whose last name has actually entered the French language as a synonym for an opportunistic social climber -- an "arriviste." Rastignac wrestles with his own moral conscience as he manipulates people to achieve his social ends.
Any additional comments?
Superbly read.

Great book and one of the best narrative performances I’ve heard
It’s Balzac’s best book and as timely as ever. The voice actor is the best I’ve ever heard.
