Est-il possible d'envisager l'histoire de la philosophie en passant directement de Plotin à Descartes ? La réponse est non. Quand même on ne serait pas croyant, il est impossible de faire l'impasse sur la pensée chrétienne, ne serait-ce que pour comprendre le monde où nous vivons.
A la suite d' Apprendre à Vivre, Luc Ferry nous convie dans le présent cours, non pas à une défense du génie chrétien, mais à un cheminement au sein de la pensée chrétienne, afin de pouvoir mieux l'expliquer et la comprendre. Il s'attache précisément à la question de savoir comment le christianisme, rompant avec la philosophie grecque tout en l'incorporant, mettra en place "une doctrine du salut et de la vie bonne".
Luc Ferry, comme tous les philosophes est d'abord un professeur de philosophie. En effet, philosopher au XXIe siècle n'a de sens qu'en prenant en compte l'histoire de cette discipline qui transforme tous les penseurs en héritiers. Laurel Canyon in the 1960s and early 1970s was a magical place where a dizzying array of musical artists congregated to create much of the music that provided the soundtrack to those turbulent times. But there was a dark side to that scene as well. Many didn't make it out alive, and many of those deaths remain shrouded in mystery to this day.
