Acerca de esta escucha
An American lawyer in Paris jail...
A bright young Texas lawyer determined to make it on his own leaves the DA's office to pursue a career as a criminal defense attorney. Just months later, he finds himself at the center of an international ecstasy drug trafficking ring. As a charismatic negotiator, Lawyer X ignores danger and resurrects a deal gone bad. Caught red-handed in Paris, France, he lands in prison indefinitely.
Isolated from his culture and marked as l'Americain, he is focused on staying alive at a time when Anglo-Franco relations are at an all-time low. Facing years in French prison and multiple life terms in the United States, Lawyer X must protect his best friend's innocence and salvage his own dignity. His mentor, a legendary Dallas attorney, fights to keep him from becoming a casualty in the war on drugs.

I enjoyed the book, even though the outcome was predictable. I felt much sympathy for the guy and can relate to what happened to him. The thing I still can't wrap my head around though is WHY? Why would someone who went to law school. passed the bar, and had a successful career in his chosen profession gamble all of that to smuggle drugs into the country, ON HIS PERSON and not even be making that much money??? It just doesn't make any kind of sense. But it's a good story. a cautionary tale of what can happen when you are focused on the dollar above all else.
AMAZING!

Then after a period of drama related to his risky behavior, he negotiates a prison world different than our own and many life problems ensue. He's always pushing the drama forward; there's never respite from the tension and action. From the beginning, he knows there's no world of absolute certainties, and his experience supports this postulate. He's honest to a fault with the reader, apparently understanding what's demanded of himself in this nobody-gets-hurt exchange with the anonymous reader.
He leaves us in a state of anticipation over what will happen next. We've come this far; why can't we continue? Readers have rights and that's why authors can't sleep until they begin writing their next book. We already know Banks' weaknesses, soft spots and when he feels such that he can't walk away. We need to know what he does subsequent to the action in his first book, waiting on that.
The narration was superb. S.P. Hopkins proficiently deploys many types of accents and voices, and he does this to make the meaning clearer and more precise. The story was in large part S.P. Hopkins, a great narrator.
Suspenseful, energetic, driving

Content: Disturbing how cavalierly author describes his incarceration for drug dealing, then being rescued via his well connected family attorneys and money. Why disturbing? Because although much is described about the author's discomfort and coping strategies, absolutely nothing is referenced about the harm caused by abuse of the drugs he smuggled. One can easily get the impression that Ecstasy is completely safe and it is an imposition to be busted for smuggling it. Really?
