À la suite de la mort de son épouse, Jean Macquart, désespéré, personnage principal de La Terre, reprend du service dans l'armée. Incorporé dans le 106e de ligne, il y est caporal. Ses hommes le respectent. Lors de la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870, il ne peut qu'assister impuissant à l'effondrement de l'Empire et à la déroute de ses armées.
Pour Zola, l'incompétence de l'état-major, l'impréparation des troupes, l'archaïsme des matériels et le rôle néfaste joué par l'impératrice Eugénie auprès de Napoléon III ont amené cette déroute. C'est aussi l'histoire d'une amitié entre Jean Macquart et l'un de ses soldats, l'intellectuel Maurice Levasseur. Le premier défend une France où règnent l'ordre et la sagesse ; le second souhaite mettre fin aux injustices et rêve de révolution. Ces divergences idéologiques ne les empêchent pas de se respecter. Lors de la déroute, chacun sauvera la vie de l'autre. Mais une fois la guerre finie, tous deux vont se retrouver à Paris et participer à la Commune : Macquart avec les Versaillais et Levasseur avec les communards...
Zola signe ici son seul roman historique. Il y dénonce les horreurs de la guerre, ce qui lui créera bien des inimitiés. Mais dans cette débâcle, n'assiste-t-on pas à l'avènement d'un monde nouveau, plus juste, plus humain, plus démocratique ? La débâcle est le dix-neuvième volume des Rougon-Macquart. Il fut, après Germinal, le plus lu des romans de Zola.
