George Sand (1804-1876)
George Sand, pseudónimo de Amantine Aurore Lucile Dupin, baronesa de Dudevant nació en París el 1de julio de 1804, hija de padre aristocrático y madre de la clase media, siempre conocida simplemente como "Aurore". En 1822, se casó con el barón Casimir Dudevant, y tuvieron dos hijos. En 1831 se separó de su esposo. Su primera novela, Rosa y Blanco fue escrita en 1831 en colaboración con Jules Sandeau, de quien tomó presumiblemente su seudónimo de Sand. Después de abandonar a su esposo, Aurore comenzó a usar vestimentas masculinas, aunque continuaba vistiéndose con prendas femeninas en reuniones sociales. Este "disfraz" masculino le permitió el acceso a lugares negados para una mujer de su condición social.
En 1933 tuvo una relación sentimental con Alfred de Musset. También entabló relación con Frédéric Chopin. Sand pasó el invierno de 1838-39 con sus hijos y Chopin en una casa cerca de Palma. Este viaje fue luego descrito en su libro Un invierno en Mallorca.
Dentro de su círculo de amigos se encontraban Franz Liszt, el pintor Eugène Delacroix, el escritor Heinrich Heine, así como Victor Hugo, Honoré de Balzac, Julio Verne y Gustave Flaubert.
Entre sus novelas más exitosas se encuentran Indiana (1832), Lélia (1833), El compañero de Francia (1840), Consuelo (1842-43), Los maestros soñadores (1853).
Entre sus obras de teatro y autobiográficas se encuentran Historia de mi vida; Elle et Lui donde cuenta su relación con Musset; y Journal Intime.
Aurore Dupin falleció en su castillo de Nohant, cerca de Chateauroux, en Francia, el 8 de junio de 1876 a la edad de 71 años a causa de un cáncer gástrico.
