La Epopeya de Gilgamesh (2500-2000 a. C) es una narración acadia en verso sobre las peripecias del rey Gilgamesh. Está basada en cinco poemas independientes sumerios, que constituyen la obra épica más antigua conocida.
Al comienzo, Gilgamesh es el despótico rey de Uruk, cuyos súbditos se quejan a los dioses. Estos atienden el reclamo creando a Enkidu, un hombre destinado a enfrentarse a Gilgamesh. Cuando ambos entraban en combate, en vez de darse muerte se hacen amigos para siempre y emprenden peligrosas aventuras. Como castigo a sus actos, los dioses hacen que Enkidu muera en plena juventud. Impresionado, Gilgamesh emprende la búsqueda de la inmortalidad, que le lleva hasta los confines del mundo, donde viven el sabio Utnapishtim y su mujer, únicos supervivientes del Diluvio, a los que los dioses concedieron el don de la Inmortalidad. Pero Gilgamesh no alcanza lo que pretende. A la vuelta, encuentra, una planta que devuelve la juventud; pero una serpiente se la roba y Gilgamesh vuelve a Uruk con las manos vacías, convencido de que la inmortalidad es patrimonio exclusivo de los dioses.
El núcleo sentimental se encuentra en el duelo de Gilgamesh tras la muerte de su amigo. Se considera la primera obra literaria que hace énfasis en la mortalidad humana frente a la inmortalidad de los dioses. La obra incluye una versión del relato del diluvio universal.
