Publié pour la première fois en 1885 dans Le Journal de Pétersbourg, La Dernière des Mohicanes racontes l'histoire du capitaine Dokoukine, dont l'heureuse tranquillité est troublée par l'arrivée de sa sœur Irène et son mari, Mr Khlykine, qu'elle tyrannise.
Anton Pavlovitch Tchekhov (1860-1904) était un médecin et écrivain russe, qui est principalement connu pour ses nouvelles et ses pièces de théâtre réalistes telles La Mouette (1896), Oncle Vania (1897) et La Cerisaie (1904). Un contemporain de Zola, Tolstoï et Bounine, l'œuvre de Tchekhov couvre un large éventail de sujets. On y trouve tant une critique de la société et une étude de la psychologie humaine, que des histoires comiques et légères, d'autres optimistes, et d'autres encore joliment lyriques. Chez Tchekhov, il n'y a jamais de jugements ou de préjugés, seulement une narration simple et un refus des intrigues traditionnelles, faisant que son style se distingue clairement de celui de ses contemporains. Il obtint en 1888 le prestigieux prix Pouchkine pour son œuvre "La Steppe" et a depuis été traduit dans de nombreuses langues.
