Unterwegs bewundert sie schöne Besitzungen und erfährt voller Reue, dass alles König Drosselbart gehört. Sie muss in des Spielmanns Häuschen arbeiten, der betont ihre Unfähigkeit. Flechten und Spinnen misslingt ihr, so muss sie Geschirr auf dem Markt anbieten. Die Leute kaufen gern, doch das zweite Mal zerbricht ihr ein betrunkener Husar zu Pferde die Ware. Ihr Mann schimpft und schickt sie als Küchenmagd ins Königsschloss, wo sie aushilft und Essensreste heimbringt.
Zur Hochzeit des Königspaares will sie zusehen, doch König Drosselbart zerrt sie auf die Tanzfläche, dass ihr die Reste aus den Taschen fallen, holt sie auf der Treppe ein und gibt sich zu erkennen. Er hatte sich als Spielmann verkleidet, ihren Hochmut zu strafen, und war auch der Husar gewesen. Sie feiern Hochzeit.
