Their old friend and mentor, Detective Sergeant Bill Roberts of the Liverpool City Police asks them to take on a cold case, a dockland murder with supernatural elements. They agree and start their own investigation just before the fifth anniversary of the murder on Christmas Eve.

Their suspect is Jack Crawley, a rough dock worker with a quick temper and a history of violence. As they approach him, he denies knowing anything about the murder, but his nervousness suggests otherwise.

Following Khan's lead, they investigate further and eventually uncover the truth behind the crime.

I Just Couldn’t Get Past the Talking Cat

I really wanted to enjoy this cozy mystery set in 1930s Liverpool, it has a great premise with a private investigations duo, Jessie Harper and George Jenkins, diving into a cold case just before Christmas. Add in some historical flair and supernatural undertones, and it had the potential to be a fun, twisty read.

But... I just couldn’t get past the talking cat. Khan, Jessie’s mysterious feline companion, plays a central role in the story, and while I appreciate a bit of whimsy, the concept just pulled me out of the mystery instead of adding to it.

I listened to the audio version, and the narrator was solid, he did a good job bringing the characters to life. Unfortunately, even with the strong narration, I never really felt drawn into the story. It felt like the plot was there, the characters were fine, but the connection just didn’t happen for me.

If you love quirky mysteries with a magical twist, this may be your cup of tea. But for me, the talking cat made it hard to take the story seriously. A decent read, just not quite what I was hoping for.

This second book in the series came together a bit better. There were still times when I felt the storyline rambled a I had a difficult time following what was going on.

Once again, the narration was pretty well done. I found myself getting used to the different pronunciations and nuances associated with the language of the time/place.

Good paranormal cozy mystery

Jessie Harper and George Jenkins run Dale Street Investigations in 1930’s Liverpool. The agency specializes in cases with supernatural elements, which makes sense because the humans are subject matter experts and Khan, the cat, can talk. They are asked by the Police to investigate a cold case of murders on the docks. The case gets very involved with a lot of paranormal activity. The narration is excellent. I received a free audiobook code for my honest review.

Good Cozy Mystery With A Little Bit Of Magic

I was entertained by this second book of the "Jessie Harper Paranormal Cozy Mystery" series. Jessie and George were asked by their friend, Detective Sergeant Bill Roberts of the Liverpool City Police, to investigate a cold case. This was my first introduction to Jessie Harper, her partner George Jenkins, and her talking cat Khan. The characters were fun, and the cat's comments were amusing. Alan R. Gron's narration was fine, and his performance kept my attention. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Alan R. Gron’s narration suits the story well, bringing the historical setting and characters to life. While the mystery itself is solid, there were a few moments where the pacing felt a bit slow, but overall, it was an enjoyable and immersive listen.

If you love cozy mysteries with a touch of the paranormal, an old-fashioned detective vibe, and a festive setting, Khan’s Christmas Capers is a great pick for the holiday season!
