Acerca de esta escucha

In this bold, momentous work, the pope, in his first book written as Benedict XVI, seeks to salvage the person of Jesus from recent "popular" depictions and to restore Jesus' true identity as discovered in the Gospels. Through his brilliance as a theologian and his personal conviction as a believer, the pope shares a rich, compelling, flesh-and-blood portrait of Jesus and incites us to encounter, face-to-face, the central figure of the Christian faith.

From Jesus of Nazareth: "The great question that will be with us throughout this entire book: But what has Jesus really brought, then, if he has not brought world peace, universal prosperity, and a better world? What has he brought? The answer is very simple: God. He has brought God! He has brought the God who once gradually unveiled his countenance first to Abraham, then to Moses and the prophets, and then in the wisdom literature: the God who showed his face only in Israel, even though he was also honored among the pagans in various shadowy guises. It is this God, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, the true God, whom he has brought to the peoples of the earth. He has brought God, and now we know his face, now we can call upon him. Now we know the path that we human beings have to take in this world. Jesus has brought God and with God the truth about where we are going and where we come from: faith, hope, and love."

Benedict XVI is a Doctor of the Church

Benedict XVI gives you Jesus in a way that no one else can. You’d think he walked the world with Jesus. I am always in awe of his wisdom and insight which I believe is a gift stemming from a life of strong faith and service.

May he rest in the Lord.

A poor sinner

Pope Benedict XVI is a genius, this book is 100,000 miles deep yet understandable by this poor half witted sinner.

Jesus of Nazareth

This book changed my life especially my understanding of the Lord’s Prayer. The book brings us to try and comprehend that Jesus is God’s gift to us and that Jesus is one with God and if we know Jesus then we can know God. That is very difficult to grasp. In fact, how does one go about his daily life with this knowledge? When the disciples saw that Jesus really was God, like when he walked on water and calmed the seas or saw him after he spoke to Elijah and his face shown like the sun, they fell down on their face. They couldn’t take it. That is how I felt after reading this book.

Masterpiece!

This book is the first published in Benedict XVI’s three volume commentary on the Gospels. As such it begins with a helpful introduction to the interpretation of scripture, defending the Catholic teaching that the principal author of scripture is the Holy Spirit and that scripture is inerrant, defending the divinity of Christ, and surveying the contributions but also continual failures of pure historical criticism.

The rest of the book covers the period in Jesus’ ministry from the baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration in a series of thematic chapters that engage with contemporary historical critical scholarship, the Church fathers, and the whole corpus of scripture. The discoveries Benedict draws from historical critical scholarship—for instance about the use of water imagery in John or about Peter’s answer to Jesus’ question about his identity in the four Gospels are quite remarkable. While Benedict is always mild in his criticism of others, his arguments against liberal exegesis which would reduce Jesus to one great philosopher among many or a political activist or a moralist or anything short of God himself is quite strong and goes far beyond what can be found in other exegetes, like NT Wright, reputed for their opposition to 19th century liberal exegesis. Benedict shows that all of these theories which make Jesus less than the one God of Israel cannot explain the biblical text itself and the historical reality of Christianity.

Benedict is not at all an apologist properly speaking (not that that is a bad thing in itself) but shows himself to be, as always, an open-minded, scholarly inquirer after the truth who after carefully weighing the best arguments presents what he thinks is the most accurate reading of the scriptural texts and it is a very orthodox Catholic reading.

Quite a Journey

Walk through a beautiful woods, or spend time at the Grand Cannon marveling at what science, a tool in the Hands of God, has made, and you begin to capture the sacrificial Love of God’s desire for us.
Pope Benedict was a consummate theologian and a wonderful teacher.
Great experience.
