Among the assembled snowbound guests he meets: Lady Assington, Beatrice Sleight, and the painter Edward Parmenger. When they all assemble in the dining room, Lady Assington announces, "I think we should have a murder."

Richard Jury and friends are great well developed characters. And Martha Grimes understated British humor is everywhere. One of the few authors that makes me laugh out loud.

Another Martha Grimes Mystery well done.

good narration and love the interaction between Jury and Plant. as audible sometimes a little confusing on who's who that would be easier with written word but still a good story. I can picture it all in my mind.

Among the best of the Richard Jury mysteries!

Martha Grimes wrote a great series of books featuring Richard Jury (cerebral detective from Scotland Yard), and his ensemble of friends--each of whom has their own distinctive (often amusing) personalities. Among them all, there is the ever-solid Melrose Plant--who has voluntarily given up his aristocratic titles to live a freer lifestyle--to the great consternation of his American aunt Agatha (who generally supplies the comic relief in the stories) and his butler Ruthven. Plant tends to be Jury's unofficial assistant in most of the mysteries.

In this one, among her best in my opinion, Jury independently meets a woman who will soon be murdered. Melrose Plant & friends separately decide to spend Christmas at an old stately home where murder will occur again. Both would initially appear unrelated, but of course, they are not. And the Jerusalem Inn (aptly named since this occurs around Christmas time, and the attempts there to produce a nativity scene would in some ways underscore the themes of family which appear all through the story) provides a key central point for all the further action.

The narrator is very good, and the story equally so. This was originally published in 1984, so it is still echoing much of the vintage british mystery genre. (It is difficult to believe that Grimes is actually an American author!). I love all her books--and this is 5th in the series, and she is really hitting her stride at this point. Well worth reading!

Another GREAT Richard Jury Mystery

I religiously read Martha Grimes novels as they were published. It’s FUN to listen all these years later. After reading all of them, it was enlightening to see that this particular book is where Ms Grimes hits her stride with characterization. At this point the story becomes less important than the personalities of Jury and Plant. I must admit, as I did when I read the books I had trouble putting the clues and mystery solution together. I always had to reread portions to see how that could have been a logical outcome. The narrator is great!!

All You Need to Know About Snooker with a Good Plot

This mystery is one in the Grimes’ style I love as it has a child interacting with Jury and Plant. Grimes is genius with animals and children weaving into the plot in brilliant fashion.

I’m Just In Love With These Book!

Martha Grimes is among my favorite writers. Mysteries have always been my favorite since I was a kid. Especially if it’s a British mystery. The details of places people and things, I can picture it all. The main characters that continue in all her books I just love that we are getting to know them and care for them. The friendship between Richard Jury and Melrose Plant is like two very different brothers. I think I love them both.

The best part of all is Steve West. I’m so happy that he was chosen as the narrator. His ability to tell a story and bring each character to life is brilliant.

Love listening to the Richard Jury mysteries while gardening. The familiar characters are always enjoyable and her plots are good.

Great Narrator

Where does Jerusalem Inn rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Very high up. I enjoyed listening to West's narration almost as much as I do Davina Porter... may Her Voice never fail..

The narrator is crucial to enjoying a book. One of my all time favorite books is Heinlein's THe Moon is a Harsh Mistress. However, the narrators voice was so mechanical I could not finish listening, even for the story.

So thank you Mr. West for being one of the good guys.
