Handlingen er vidt forgrenet, med Ingmarsgården og to generationer af Ingmarssønnerne i centrum. Af kærlighed til slægtsgården må Ingmar træffe det umulige valg at gifte sig med en rig bondes datter frem for med skolelærerens datter Gertrud, som han elsker. Gertrud bliver halvt vanvittig af sorg, gribes af religiøs vækkelse og drager til Jerusalem sammen med en del af sognets beboere. Snart følger Ingmar imidlertid efter for at gøre sin uret god igen og hente Gertrud hjem.
