Acerca de esta escucha
Imagine hearing these words: "She has Alzheimer's." Now imagine that "she" is vibrant, active, loving, healthy...and just 55. Acclaimed CBS News reporter Barry Petersen writes about hearing the unimaginable; what it meant, what it still means, what he did---and didn't do---and how this beautiful love story needs to be heard by the thousands of families who have already heard that same devastating diagnosis: early onset Alzheimer's disease. Even though Barry has spent his long-time, award-winning television career covering wars and events that shaped the world, he was not even slightly prepared for what happened to his darling wife, Jan, and how it would impact his life.

What could possibly be “lucky” about addiction? Absolutely nothing, thought Laura McKowen when drinking brought her to her knees. As she puts it, she “kicked and screamed . . . wishing for something - anything - else” to be her issue. The people who got to drink normally, she thought, were so damn lucky. But in the midst of early sobriety, when no longer able to anesthetize her pain and anxiety, she realized that she was actually the lucky one. Lucky to feel her feelings, live honestly, really be with her daughter, change her legacy.

It's a report tempered by hard times. In "Matricide", Daum unflinchingly describes a parent's death and the uncomfortable emotions it provokes; and in "Diary of a Coma" she relates her own journey to the twilight of the mind. But Daum also operates in a comic register. With perfect precision, she reveals the absurdities of the marriage-industrial complex, of the New Age dating market, and of the peculiar habits of the young and digital.

Compassion
If you could sum up Jan's Story in three words, what would they be?
Powerful for the caregiver
What was one of the most memorable moments of Jan's Story?
Jan used to pack when they would go on trips and he'd have to now go in and repack because Jan had packed too much and some were for cold weather others for summer.
What does Barry Petersen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His true feelings and emotions
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No I needed to take it in pieces to fully absorb.
Any additional comments?
If you or someone you know is a caregiver it's a must read. Loved the truth Barry tells it like it is.

Dire need
What stood out the most, was each person's dire need from so many unexplainable emotions. The sheer honesty. The depth of feelings. This is a great book.
