 James McGreevey was the governor of New Jersey from 2002 to 2004. His memoir, The Confession, details his political rise and fall, and his coming to terms with being a "gay American". In this interview, he explores how the personal and political are intertwined.

Andrew Sullivan is the editor of AndrewSullivan.com, as well as an essayist for Time magazine and the author of The Conservative Soul: How We Lost It, How to Get it Back.

    In August 2004, then-governor of New Jersey, Jim McGreevey, announced to the press that he is gay. A successful politician, a twice-married father of two, his political career, at least temporarily, was over. But his celebrity was just beginning. Many public appearances - including a turn on The Oprah Winfrey Show - and one book later, McGreevey is still very much in the public life.

    This interview for the 92nd Street Y in New York with famed liberal blogger and gay activist, Andrew Sullivan, was conducted in late 2006 and was part of McGreevey’s promotional tour for his book, The Confession.
